5.0 out of 5 stars Great - Even for Today!, November 28, 2003
This review is from: Boss-A-Troniq (Audio CD)
I remember towards the end of 2000, I checked out Thievery Corporation's compilation titled "ESL presents Jet Society" and thought that was just phenomenal. Then I picked this one up a few weeks later and besides the crossover from the Nicola Conte track + Hi Fi Trumpet (albeit, this one's a remix), found this to be the perfect companion piece. I've found myself listening to this quite a bit recently and have to admit, it's so diverse and so good you'd do yourself an injustice if you see it and pass it by in the record shop.

This CD starts out with a tropical mix of Hi-Fi Trumpet and then kicks into Tosca's cool Boss On the Boat (I remember this song was actually featured on a shampoo commercial a few years ago... sorry!). Picking up after that is elusive Dutch band Bahia Patrol's "Bossa 911" and the previous reviewer was right - you can visualize the martini being mixed with this song in the background. And then next up is Towa Tei's seemingly timeless Technova, a cut that features Bebel Gilberto's smooth vocals and Towa Tei's tremendous production (not to mention Ryuichi Sakamoto's input!). Straight afterwards, there's the beaty and seductive S-Tone Inc. classic "Ainda Sonhar" which does wade in and out of your speakers like a vivid dream. Before the cd gets too downtempo, Nicola Conte picks it up with a remix and his own cut followed but Truby Trio doing the same thing - there's something special about Carajillo. But taking a cue from Nicola Conte, Carajillo is preceeded by a Truby Trio remix to the very rare and very good Frederic Galliano cut "Plis Inini Nr. 2". And finally the CD winds down with a cool city like remix of the Victor Davies "Brother", Groove Armada with a relaxed track and Everything but the Girl closes out the CD.

All in all, I HIGHLY recommend this cd. The artists on here are top notch (including Beanfield which I didn't purposely omit - Catapla was a perfect addition) and this is a very positive collection of their work from around 1999-2000. The vibe is very consistent through-out. There is a sequel to this CD titled "Boss-A-Troniq vol 2" however it, just like this, is VERY difficult to find. Volume 2 is also very good and again if you're interested in this, definitely check out ESL's Jet Society and Brazilectro vol 2 & vol 4 and Nu Bossa Cafe. One more... there is a Boss-A-Troniq vol III out too however I have been unable to find it anywhere. Still, this cd in particular holds a very special space in my heart thanks to the quality of the tunes and the time at which I got it. I love it.

4.0 out of 5 stars On e of the silkier bossa albums out there, February 10, 2002
This review is from: Boss-A-Troniq (Audio CD)
Back in the early 1960s the sensual tropicalia styling of Bossa Nova spread from Brazil to other shores, offering us an ideal sound for boys and girls swaying on the beach. Now a new generation of producers, influenced by those days, are blending modern electronic techniques with that sound, a soothing blend ripe for deck chair listening or dancing.

Of those, Vienna stalwarts Tosca come to mind, with scat-whispered "Boss on the Boat" a syrupy smooth cut from their album Suzuki. Actually, the whole album goes down quite easily. "Bossa 911" seems engineered for cocktails, "Monticello" spices it up, and Towa Tei's multi-lingual "Technova" adds intricate production value with a good dose of pep. Bigger hits surface from Nicole Conte's inescapable chic "Bossa Per Due," and Compost Records stars Rainer Truby Trio's offering of two hot dance cuts.

In fact, barring some tempo-chilled tracks near the end that arrive too quickly, Boss-a-troniq serves as one of the sharper home lounging albums of the genre.
