4.0 out of 5 stars A Surprisingly Great CD!
This is really my Dad's CD, but I burned a copy of it for myself. I'm 16, but I really enjoy this CD (call me crazy!) We first heard it when my Godmother played it on one of our annual sojourns to the magnificent Bass Lake. It's a really fun collection of jazzy hits. This is a really good CD! I love it! Even though I can't understand any of the words, I still love it. My...

3.0 out of 5 stars An Okay CD - but get the new one instead.
I purchased this a couple years ago, and at the time it was a pretty nice CD. The beats were fresh - BossaCucaNova was in there with the rest of the whole slew of groups looking to create a new sound in the Brazilian music/Bossa Nova scene. They went the rout of revisited Classics and made this release. When I first got it, it was terrific. Like another reviewer said,...

Even though I can't understand any of the words, I still love it. My favorite song is Track 2, "Vai De Vez". This CD was really hard for us to track down, because we kept seeing CD's that we thought were this, but turned out not to be. This is a must-have for any CD collection. It's awesome, even for the younger generation, like mine. Enjoy!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars An Okay CD - but get the new one instead., August 28, 2001

I purchased this a couple years ago, and at the time it was a pretty nice CD. The beats were fresh - BossaCucaNova was in there with the rest of the whole slew of groups looking to create a new sound in the Brazilian music/Bossa Nova scene. They went the rout of revisited Classics and made this release. When I first got it, it was terrific. Like another reviewer said, great for the beach, and very fun. But it isn't timeless music. This is very much out of date now. So many new sounds have come out of the label Bossa Cuca Nova is on (Six Degrees) that this sound seems, to put it mildly, a bit cheesy and out of date. Acts like Suba, Bebel Gilberto, Andrea Marquee, Zuco 103 and many many others in the new movement like Smoke City/Da Lata and etc. have put a stamp on some of the new sounds. On this disc, the best song today is the one song done with one of the guitarist's fathers, Roberto Menescoal - O Barquinho. Otherwise, you may be a bit disappointed by the songs and re-makes of the classics. You get a BRazilian feel from Revisited Classics, but not much originality or consistency. That said - you should look at their latest album - Brasilidade. It is FAR better than this one. Cris Delanno is featured in vocals, and Bossa Cuca Nova learned a lesson and involved Roberto Menescoal more. More experience led to a far greater album. The difference he makes is extraoridinary. The sound on the new CD is similar to O Barquihno - and yes, the new CD is GREAT beach music and summer tunes. So I'd go with the newest CD and only check this one out if you're very curious.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Re-hash of the orginals., June 11, 2005
This review is from: Bossa Cuca Nova: Revisited Classics (Audio CD)
BossaCucaNova is a great new DJ sound obviously aimed at the new generations of Brazilian music fans who are yerning for more than "just" the gold era "MPB" classics they grew up on. This album symbolizes that fusion of DJ sounds and personal new takes on old classics. The only downside to this album is that purists will cringe at it and new listeners who haven't heard the orginals may in some cases lose something in the lack of musical translation. But after all, I think I have 3 favorite MPB takes of Berimbau, and I welcome a this new twist! Another good exmple of this would be "A twist of Jobim" albeit a different sound than this, but it's easily considered a great album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very nice, not spectacular, February 7, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Bossa Cuca Nova: Revisited Classics (Audio CD)
This CD is like a cubist painting -- it takes the basic elements of classic Bossa Nova sounds, and twists/remixes/re-composes them into a new whole. The original is still recognizable, but the remix is a new work of art with its own twist. My only problem is that I think to appreciate this you have to like both the old and the new -- if you like this kind of dance music in general, but don't know the originals, would you really appreciate what is going on here? I don't think so. I think the "Red Hot in Rio" album, which is also an album of modern versions of Brazilian classis, appeals to "new music" ears much more effectively in this. You can appreciate "Red Hot in Rio" even if you don't know the originals. This album, on the other hand, is best appreciated if you have a foot firmly planted in the old with another foot firmly planted in the new.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bossa Nova Graveyard, February 10, 2001
This review is from: Bossa Cuca Nova: Revisited Classics (Audio CD)
A great disappointment. I have love Bossa Nova for more than ten years and after reading the hype I was really interested to hear what the new generation of musicians has made of some of the classics. The answer is not very much. Firstly most of these arrangements are not new at all, they are what you might expect from the Hilton Hotel Lobby Band with their characteristic lack of everythingness. The arrangements which are new sound unsympathetic to me. What's the point of simply adding a few computer generated noises over the backing track? The whole project lacks imagination - its only positive feature is that it makes the originals sound even better

4.0 out of 5 stars Cool CD!, September 22, 1999

I bough this CD in the beginning of the summer and it did me well on the warm, sunny beach. A fun, quick uptempo beat with acapella and updated classics. The studio sound is newat... you feel like you're in an outdoor night club in Rio! It won't make you forget the classics by any means, but it competes above the other remakes, thought not as smooth as Red Hot & Rio. Pick it up + remember the summer!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Remixed and reformatted Brazillian Bossa Nova Jazz, July 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Bossa Cuca Nova: Revisited Classics (Audio CD)
Remixing Bossa Nova definately makes for some interesting listening, at least in the case of Bossa Cuca Nova and their "Revisited Classics," the first acid jazz CD actually produced in Brazil. They even include two of the original Bossa Nova songs (how they were prior to their remixing work), allowing one to observe the general differences between the original and the remixed version. My only complaint with this CD is that some of the tracks don't quite seem to "take off." Also, the CD being as short as it was, perhaps they could have included a few more of the original Bossa Nova cuts. Other than that, this was a very interesting CD with an authintic Brazilian air not present in some of the Bossa Nova remixes produced in the US or UK.

Danceable, fun, creative -- if you're not in a good mood when you start listening to this, you will be by the end of the album. Contagious beat & full of joy for life.

3.0 out of 5 stars Surprising Bossa Nova with a techno twist- Spicy Rhythms, September 25, 2000

Mary Hendra Paulson (Watsonville, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bossa Cuca Nova: Revisited Classics (Audio CD)
I love Bossa Nova and expected a re-mix to be a desecration of the Brazilian originals- however, I'm glad to report, I was wrong. This CD of "reconstructed" classics is innovative, yet, it respects the traditional genre. They didn't just add drum machine tracks and synth. These new arrangements are hip interpretations and quite listenable. Check the "Maria Moita" clip first for a great intro to this CD, and for you traditionalists, listen to "Meditacao." It will surprise you, but it is well done. Folks who are interested in Brazilian music should give this a listen, just to keep current. Even if you're not crazy about these interpretations, you have to give these folks credit for using outstanding musicians, and you have to admit, it takes the music in directions you never would expect.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Refreshing and UPBEAT new mix of classic samba, June 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Bossa Cuca Nova: Revisited Classics (Audio CD)
Ohhh man, is THIS a fun CD! What this group of multi-talented artists have done with classic Boss Nova songs is taken their original beat and infused them with extremely modern sounds like techno and calypso to create a toe-tapping, mind-bending experience. These songs are perfet for dancing and or daydreaming of the Caribbean, and as an added bonus, for all those DJs out there, a sampler of salsa beats are included for looping. Muy bien!
