5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully contagious
I did notice that some of the songs are repeated and I don't usually like that in a CD but they are different versions of the same song and they are all wonderfully done. I do intend to watch the movie as soon as I get a chance having already heard some great reviews of it from my family in Brasil. I love listening to Bossa Nova music and have several CDs from singers...

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring - - Wish I had not bought it!
I love the CD from Next Stop Wonderland and thought this would be similarly fantastic. However, I was wrong -- this is the most boring CD I've heard in a long, long time. I am going to delete the tracks from my iPod.

I did notice that some of the songs are repeated and I don't usually like that in a CD but they are different versions of the same song and they are all wonderfully done. I do intend to watch the movie as soon as I get a chance having already heard some great reviews of it from my family in Brasil. I love listening to Bossa Nova music and have several CDs from singers such as Laura Figi, Stan Getz, Joao Gilberto, Tom Jobim, among many others and I can garantee that if you acquire this particular compilation you won't be disappointed in the least. Sit on the couch by the fire in the quiet and sincerely listen for the complexities and beauty of Bossa Nova. Those who purchase this CD will be doing something for their ears that is rarelly achieved with other types of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bossa Nova Lives, December 9, 2001

I saw the movie a couple of weeks ago on cable. The story wasn't that great but the soundtrack rocks!! I've always been a fan of Tom Jobim and his bossa nova compositions. The arrangements of Deodato on this CD pay tribute to the master. Anyone who loves the bossa nova genre should pick up this CD. Now, if only I can take some time off to make it to Rio for Mardi Gras...

For anyone who has felt the sultry Rio heat, lazed on its beautiful beaches and has been seduced by the magical charm of its people, this album will take you there. Beautifully constructed melodies, haunting Portuguese lyrics(English, too) and sensual bossa nova rhythms wash over you like a tropical wave. For lovers of Brazilian music and the newly curious, this album is sure to please. Romantic, sexy, invigorating..., a soulful massage for the senses.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love in a CD of Jobim, February 15, 2002
By
Sean D. Green (Fort Worth, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bossa Nova: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1999 Film) (Audio CD)
"Excellent" comes to mind in this effort to collaborate Jobim's famous works of the Bossa Nova sound for this film. The CD was equal to the film's ability to transcend the characters by the majesty of the music that played in the background. Bossa Nova has become one of my favorite films of late, and the CD was a nice addition as well. There are some old standards here, but some very well done remixes as well. It gives you that romantic feeling all over again, and having been to Brazil on 2 occasions, makes me yearn for it all over again.
See the movie, and buy the CD. If you're a true romantic, you'll understand what I mean.

5.0 out of 5 stars Alone and sexy, December 9, 2000

A Brazilian friend of mine took me to see the film and half-way through I decided I had to have the soundtrack. A first for me as I never usually even notice the music while I'm watching a film.

I've now had the CD for 6 months and its still in my CD player!! I simply can't get enough of it. I play it when I'm alone in my room and immediately feel swept up. I play it when I have friends over and I sometimes stop listening to them to sing along or just get lost in its soulfulness.

The music is excellent (as any Jobim fan will tell you) and features all the great favourites: The Girl from Ipanema, Aguas de Marco and others, as well as Insensitive sung by Sting which sounds like it was written for him.

If you only have one bossa nova CD in your collection, it should be this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classy, Soft, Inspirating; the very soul of Bossa Nova..., July 22, 2000
This review is from: Bossa Nova: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1999 Film) (Audio CD)
Actually I don't have the CD... yet. But I've seen the film twice! The music is VERY good, just a little on the soft side, the melodic lines are fluent, the rithm is on the soft, slightly subdued side... as if the producer was aware that, if the music was recorded in full strenght(rithmically), it could (and surely would) steal the story a lot of impact.

But still, the message is direct and conveying, the very sense of the aroma from Rio is almost palpable. Music arrangements by Eumir Deodato show a lot of class. Don't miss this film, even when the story is quite simple, the film leaves one very motivated; and the music, while a little subdued, is still very compelling. I'm eagerly waiting for my sample of the CD. It deserves a quiet night with a glass of good wine and some stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Pieces!, November 7, 2003

This review is from: Bossa Nova: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1999 Film) (Audio CD)
I loved the movie, which was a very nice and positive portrayal of Rio De Janeiro. The people, the culture, music and characters. It wasn't depressing and bogging you with the realities which are, well, reality. Instead you have chance occurences, tough decisions and moving forward in life.

Eumir Deodato did the original score to this movie, which is really a homage to Antonio Carlos Jobim. In fact, it's best to describe this disc as a hommage to a specific album - "Terra Brasilis". Mixed into some original makes and takes of classic Bossa Nova songs are the original renditions, and added for good measure was Sting's take of "Insensitive" from Red Hot & Rio. Barbara Mendes (check out Bossa Tres Jazz II) features on on the vocals, a light, adorable voice she has - good to hear her use lyrics! And the take of One Note Samba was short, but very good. The song I think I enjoyed the most was the fusion of the original score piece "Suddenly" with "So Tinha De Ser Com Voce". It really did summarize the movie, a mixture of cultures. Half in English, have in Portuguese. Finally, I loved the final cut, Soul Mates, by Eumir Deodato. It mixed in the theme and Inutil Paisagem very nicely - and it's a stunning, beautiful, emotional track.

All in all, I definitely enjoyed this CD. I picked it up a few years ago at around the same time I picked up another soundtrack - Next Stop Wonderland. Of the two, I actually give Next Stop Wonderland, which also featured some originals but also had work from Bebel Gilberto/Claudio Ragazzi among others, the nod. But I wouldn't chose just one - both are fantastic and highly recommended. As is seeing both movies!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good movie/Great soundtrack, September 18, 2003
This review is from: Bossa Nova: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1999 Film) (Audio CD)
My husband and I are counting the days until we can return to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This CD strengthens our love for the sounds, but makes us pine for Rio even more. A fabulous collection of samba and bossa nova, you will play this CD hundreds of times and never tire of it. There are also wonderful descriptions of each song's meaning and artists. Get this one...close your eyes...and you'll be back drinking a caipirinha.
