One of the most beautiful cd's of all time(originally an LP). This album is gorgeous, romantic, and bailable. If you like Brasilian jazz, this is the best, and Byrd is the most skillful bossa nova guitarist. Also Byrd is responisble for bringing the Bossa Nova sound to the USA and turning into jazz con Stan Getz. A great album for the jazz fan who already owns Jazz Samba and wants to discover more great jazz bossa nova.

Without a doubt, this is Byrd's greatest work. You will find yourself spellbound by his playing. He takes no backseat to other musicians in the lineup. It's Byrd out front most the time. 7 added tunes tacked on to the original vinyl reccordings don't do it any justice unfortunately.

I have the original vinyl, unfortunately it is somewhat scratched. I'm glad I was able to replace it with the CD, excellent quality of sound reproduction, in fact I'm able to hear some things I wasn't able to before.

Charlie Byrd was one of the first musicians to bring the bossa nova sound to the United States. On this 1962 release, he plays acoustic guitar, accompanied by Keter Betts on bass, Bill Reichenbach on drums, and strings. The CD also contains six bonus tracks recorded in 1963 with Gene Byrd (aka "Joe Byrd") on bass and Buddy Deppenschmidt on drums, also with a string accompaniment.

The bossa nova sound suited Byrd's finger-style guitar playing perfectly. If you are new to Byrd's output, it needs to be understood that he was a bit eclectic and occasionally mixed in some blues licks, even when playing bossa nova music. This may put off some purists, but frankly, I always liked it. Track 3, Meditation, is an example of his interspersing a blues element in the middle of the tune. This track became a hit single, reaching the Billboard charts in 1963, and was played periodically for a number of years thereafter. I recall listening to it on the radio ca. 1965 or 1966. There is however, an identical version of the song available in which the bluesy riff is deleted. Either way, Byrd's version of this Brazilian classic is irresistible and played beautifully.

Byrd was classically trained and even released a classical album early in his career under the name Charles Byrd. Well, he was really Charlie Byrd from Chuckatuck, Virginia. Not exactly the classical music capital of the world. Making it as a classical guitarist is not easy, as there are those who are capable of playing in nuanced ways that are difficult for an untrained listener (me included) to really appreciate. A trained guitarist would understand. I'm glad that Charlie Byrd drifted away from that genre and moved into the acoustic jazz area.

I have always enjoyed Charlie Byrd's acoustic guitar sound, even saw him perform at the Shadows in the Georgetown section of Washington, DC with his brother on an amplified flute back in the 1970s. I have several of his LPs, one that was most memorable was the 33 1/3 recording with members of the Washington Symphony Orchestra, "Bird in the Wind", also a CD now. But, he was drowned out on a CD with the Annapolis Brass that he made later. Charlie's style and use of no amplification makes for an understated and near classical 16-string rendition of jazz, so his Bossa Nova recording is perfect for him in terms of fronting his intricate picking with light background stings and horns and a jazz style that complements his quiet voice: Little wonder that he found Brazilian jazz to his liking and introduced El Norte jazz lovers to Bossa Nova.

If there is one CD to own from this little-talked about acoustic guitar genius, this one is it.
