Charlie is a bossy rooster. He keeps telling the hens what to do, until the hens decide to walk away. When they (the hens) arrive at a new patch of ground they scratch up a rusty old weather vane - shaped like a rooster. Charlie ruins their discovery and drives the hens away and no one considers the weather vane again until they see it on top of the hen house the next day. Turns out the farmer has polished the metal rooster up and put him out on display. Finally, the hens declare, someone that bossy Charlie cannot boss around.

Okay, it's not Tolstoy, but those of us who are now circulating through the world of beginning readers are pretty used to weak plots and weird concepts. And if you are like me, you just try to find something that the children will like if only for a read or two.

As to the readers we've read, I would say that the "The Bossy Rooster" falls somewhere in the middle of the pack in regards to interest and content. Not Tolstoy, not total pabulum. One of it's strengths is that the pictures are pretty cute and the dialog gives more advanced beginners a chance to play-read a character or two.

**Reading Level **

This is a `Blue Level' reader in the "Read It! Readers" series. Blue level is defined as : "presents new ideas using a larger vocabulary and varied sentence structure.

I would say that is probably at the first grade level (although I have found that what encompasses `first grade' varies around the country-lol). In any case, here is an example of text from the book so you can judge for yourself.

The hens scratched wildly.
Dust flew everywhere -
high up in the air,
and straight into Charlie's face!

Suddenly, the bird
turned in the wind.
It knocked Charlie
right off the roof!

Three Stars. A more challenging reader for beginners. The pictures are cute and the layout straightforward. HOWEVER, seems a rather pricey acquisition unless you have other children who will use it in subsequent years.
