Not perfect, but if you pay attention, it is well worth it.,

I have had this knife for about three years now and use it constantly... A boss I had a couple years ago saw me changing a blade one day and wanted t osee it... I showed it to him and he liked it so much, he went and bought 3 or 4 for the shop. ALL of them worked PRECISELY the same as mine. It's so perfectly simple to change blades, it's downright silly, BUT... there is a catch...
This tool has one GLARING flaw... It's simply not immediately obvious how to PROPERLY operate it to change blades. However, I have it down pat, so follow along and learn... To remove a blade, it takes three steps... 1) Push the slider button down and forward ALL the way to the front until it stops (three position stops)... 2) Now, PRESS the slider button down and press forward... it will click and stay down. 3) FIRMLY press on the yellow release button with your thumb and grasp the blade and withdraw it... To insert a new blade... 1) PRESS AND HOLD the yellow button and grasping blade with thumb and forefinger of opposite hand, insert blade into tool and push all the way back until it stop moving (there should be little or no resistance. 2) RETRACT the blade normally. Notes: 1) If you try to insert a blade WITHOUT PRESSING AND HOLDING THE YELLOW BUTTON, the blade will pop the lock into place and the blade will not fit into the tool. 2) If when the blade is inserted and the slider is all the way back, if the blade sticks out any at all, then the blade is NOT installed correctly. Follow the steps to remove the blade and try inserting it again, and BE SUER to push it all the way back before releasing the yellow button. If you do this properly, you will have NO problems. Having used a number of these knives, I assure EVERYONE, if you do these steps PRECISELY as described, this knife works perfectly every time!!! It really is JUST THAT SIMPLE!

Stanley 10-788,

I work in a warehouse and I need a good Box-Cutter, and of all the Box-Cutters I have owned and used, this one is by far the best. First off; you don't need any tools to change the blade, and the knife holds about 6 blades in its handle which conveniently drops down. It takes me all of 20 seconds to change the blade, even less time if I am only changing which half of the blade sticks out. Another nice thing is that it is meaty and it has a rubber like material on the top side which gives you a grip that is un-real, so it feels secure and comfortable in your hand whether you're wearing gloves or no gloves. Trust me when I say that this knife will not slip out of your hands, gloves or no gloves. It has a string cutting feature, but I have not used it so I will not comment on it. I have used the Knife for over two months now, and it has fallen off shelves, boxes, etc..... onto the cement floor (sometimes from as high as 7 or 8 feet) all I ever do is just pick it up cause nothing comes loose on it, and the knife still looks new. The Stanley 10-788 is truely a great utility knife, it is not a knife you will be replacing anytime soon, as long as you don't let anyone borrow it.

Been using it for about 6 months. When I first got it I tore off the cardboard holder without reading the directions for changing the blades and had the same problems as many have posted. Once I found out how to use it, it works great every time. Blade changes are easy and reversing the blade is extrememly quick and simple. The blade always retracts completely. If you buy it, read the instructions!

UPDATE: I recently was cutting some windo caulk when the blade came right out of the knife, not cool. So if you need this knife for hard things don't buy it but for boxes or lighter things it is great. Eric and I have the same idea. The knife is great, hands down best I've ever used. Ok so you cant change the blade in 5 seconds, but I can in well under a minute while on the cell phone. So all you guys who are construction workers who cant work a utility knife I really feel sorry for you and your companys. In order to have the blade all the way down so you do not cut yourself press the yellow button and push the new blade down until the second rivet catches. Also the knife is very comfortable, can hold up to like 8 blades for storage and fits in knife sheaths great even with its 'L' shape. One minus is the string cutter, pretty much worthless.

This knife is awesome. It Swing out blade storage makes it real easy to change blades. The push button allows you to change blades without taking it apart, but it does take a little bit to get the push button down pat. All in All it is a nice razor knife.

I really wasn't expecting to be *impressed* by a utility knife, but this one works so well I went and bought two more to have around the house. The handle gives you a much better grip with much less effort than the plain metal ones. It really feels secure in your hand even with a relaxed grip. It took me a couple minutes to realize you have to push the blade forward past the 'full out' position to be able to change the blade, but once you work that out, you can easily change a blade in 5-10 seconds. I'll definitely be looking at other Stanley hand tools.

As a professional carpenter I have put this utility knife to the test for the past couple of years.Overall I am happy with this one. I really, really enjoy the ease of getting new blades out of the handle. The handle has withstood the test of time and still works well. I wish the knife was a little smaller, like the Stanley FatMax, but the quick change design of this knife makes this the best one I've ever used.

Do not buy!,
This review is from: Stanley Bostitch Curved Quick-Change Utility Knife, Stainless Steel Retractable Blade, 3 Blades (10788) (Tools & Home Improvement)
... It does not work and I'm not sure how they can even sell it? First off, I couldn't get it to accept a blade. The yellow button wouldn't press in and the top push button wouldn't push all the way forward. After 10 minutes of agony, I decided to take it apart and manually put the blade in. No go, it wouldn't close properly and blade stuck out at its close position. The blade would wobble a bit also, making this tool completely useless. After picking up all of parts that were all over my shop (after it was thrown against the wall) and putting it back together, I did like the feel of the product. Nice weight and good comfort. But if I can't even get it to work manually, it's going back. I can't believe a company like Stanley would make such a ... product. Don't they do field tests?

Heavy and uncomfortable,

I am a packer/shipper and use a box cutter/utility knife all day long. I have used the Stanley 10-499, the aluminum Craftsman version of the 10-499, and the recently the Stanley 10-788. The Craftsman is by far the best. I have been to Sears 4 times now looking for a replacement for my warn out one but without luck. The workers at Sears have no clue if the item has been discontinued or what. During an online search for new one I found the 10-788. The 10-788 does the job but at the same time is uncomfortable and very heavy. (I really liked the weight of the aluminum Craftsman since I have to carry the knife all day long.) This would be a good knife if I didn't have to use it as much and didn't have to carry it around. LOOK FOR THE CRAFTSMAN.

The best I ever had.,

I have owned a roofing business for the past 7 years. My biggest problem with cutters is that the blade pulls out when cutting thick shingles (You have to use a hook blade). This is the ONLY one I've had that the blade WILL NOT pull out. It will break first. I have 4 of them & they are all like that. Putting the blade in the cutter is tricky at first. That is what I think all of the other complaints were about. Once you figure that out, it's a snap.
