Horizon Series MCS130 Surround Speaker System -- Realistic Sound From Every Point in the Room

The Boston Acoustic MCS 130 surround sound speaker system is a step-up in every way. The front speakers are LCR's with dual 3.5-inch mid-bass drivers flanking a 1-inch Kortec® soft dome tweeter. The surround speakers use a single 3.5-inch mid-bass with the same 1-inch tweeter. The MCS 130 speakers feature 5-way binding posts instead of spring clips, and they sport the elegant soft-touch finish. The MCS 130 down-firing subwoofer uses a 200-watt RMS amplifier and a 10-inch woofer. The subwoofer uses the same soft-touch finish as the speakers. With three LCRs, two surrounds and one subwoofer, this system will meet all your entertainment sound needs.

Complete with three LCRs, two surrounds and one subwoofer
(MCS 130 surround shown in black)

Techology is Key

All Horizon bookshelf and LCR speakers share certain key technologies. They all use 1-inch Kortec® soft dome tweeters, for smooth, extended high frequency response out to 25kHz. The woofers feature Deep Channel® Design, or DCD, providing increased bass output without the risk of bottoming out. The woofers all have phase plugs for smoother midrange response and increased power handling. With Horizon, Boston introduces RBDD which stands for Reduced Baffle Diffraction Design. The result is wider and smoother dispersion and more life-like sound. Please click on the hyperlink to learn more. Finally, these models feature MagnaGuard® video shielding, making them safe for use near any type of display.

Features to Please

All Horizon bookshelf and LCR speakers share certain key features. They all have a racetrack shaped, rear port that is flared on both ends. The shape helps reduce the footprint of the port, taking up less room on the back of the speaker. The combination of the flared opening on both ends of the port tube and its rear location virtually eliminates chuffing, or audible port noise. They all have 5-way binding posts to accommodate the use of any thickness of speaker wire or style of termination. They all come with an adjustable footing, allowing them to sit securely on a flat surface either vertically or horizontally and to be angled toward the listening position. They all have an integrated keyhole for quick and easy wall mounting. The keyhole and standoffs on the back of the speaker keep it far enough off the wall to not block the port, maintaining the sound quality that the Boston engineers intended they have. They all feature a soft-touch finish, giving them an elegant high-end appearance and terrific feel.

Sized to Surprise

With many of the same technologies that drive Boston Acoustics' most powerful speakers, these compact speakers are sized to surprise.

This is a great system of speakers. Well-built, good looking, durable, good connections, but MOST importantly - great sound. The subwoofer is a MONSTER of good bass! I am extremely pleased with this surround sound system, better than any I have ever had. The only reason I am giving this product 4 stars, rather than 5 is that the overall depth of sound is not quite as sharp as I expected. The rear channels are too average for a 5 star rating. The center and front speakers are really good. This is an outstanding, overall diverse and powerful set of speakers for anything from watching James Bond to a Pavarotti concert. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Speakers, February 5, 2008
This review is from: Boston Acoustics Horizon Series MCS130 5.1-Channel Surround Speaker System (Black) (Electronics)
I'm no audiophile but I bought this speaker system along with a Denon 788 receiver to replace a Sony surround soud system that came with my house. For a speaker set these speaker have really good sound. The larger center and front speakers have two woofers and one tweeter. The rear have a woofer and tweeter. These sound much better than the Sony system with its one way speakers. The subwoofer has very good bass and has yet to distort.
The only complaint than I have is that out of the box there is a plastic tab that in order to remove you have to remove the speaker grill. While doing this I manage to break off one of the posts that hold the grill to the speaker. I called Boston Acoustics and they did send a replacement, no questions asked. The grills are very fragile so use caution.

4.0 out of 5 stars Subwoofer the weakest link in this system, December 1, 2009
This review is from: Boston Acoustics Horizon Series MCS130 5.1-Channel Surround Speaker System (Black) (Electronics)
If I had paid more than I did, 300 euros, I would've been sorely disappointed.
The satellites do sound great, not as warm as my old Infinity bookshelves, but very full. They are a little flat, not dynamic and they don't fill my little 6 X 15 ft. room, but still, their range is good and pure.

    However!
The subwoofer, no matter what settings I've used on my very nice Marantz SR5002 AVR, and no matter where I put the ugly beast, doesn't hold up. I'm going to put it on the market and look for another sub. It's boomy, and while it :may: fill in the lost lower frequencies, it's hit and miss. Plus, did I say it's boomy?
Sorry, but for me, "house shaking" does not equal a good sub.
Better heard and not felt, is my feeling. I feel this thing, but just hear "whoomp whoomp whoomp." Is that music, or a jack-hammer?!
My old subs, a passive set by Cambridge Soundworks did a great job for their 15-year life. I heard all the rich sounds, but never got jolted mid-song by a misplaced "bra-ooomp!!"
Another :little: problem is the transformer in the sub hums. I had to take it out and re-screw it on the outside of the panal on the sub; no biggie if you've got a soldering iron, but we shouldn'be be hearing the sub humming during quieter parts of movies, right?

My opinion? If you can get this for under 300, take it, keep the sats, and try and sell the sub for a few bucks to a starving student.
