BA S35 - wonderful upgrade speakers,
By Michael Thomas (Oregon USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Boston Acoustics S35 3 1/2" S Series Coaxial Speaker (Personal Computers)
To start, I have a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee that came stock with the Boston Acoustics 'premium' sound system - six speakers with DSP amplifier. I blew the front 3.5" dash speakers. I bought a pair of Boston Acoustics S35 speakers to replace the blown BA stock speakers.
And as a reference point, I have just had my hearing tested as part of my annual physical exam process. I have excellent hearing with no hearing loss at either end of the spectrum. So I can hear LOL. What amazing little speakers!! I thought the system sounded pretty good as it was (before the front speakers blew), but with the S35s, it's like a blanket was lifted. What new clarity that I had not experienced before. And the sound seems better separated, if that makes any sense. The way the BA premium systems is in the Jeep, the front door speakers are woofers only and the dash speakers handle the front midrange and tweeting. The rear door speakers are 2-way. The speakers were about literally a drop in replacement. I had to snip the stock connector off and splice in the new connector wires with the provided wire splice lugs. Otherwise the S35s fit perfectly in the stock hole and I reused the stock mounting screws. Very easy. Great improvement to my system!!

I bought these along with Boston Acoustics SL65's to go in my PT Cruiser. You need to dremel out the hole a tad, mostly the bottom of the hole, but they then drop in. I got the setup without planning, and without knowing much about high end sound quality in car audio. I eventually plan to have a 3way setup up front - right now its 80ish HZ and up on the SL65's, and 600hz or so on up for these. I should really have the SL65's bandpass - and cut it off around 750, leaving the S35's at 600 and up.
Excellent sound quality for the price. You MUST filter out just about everything below about 500hz - or you'll hit this speakers xmax (excursion limit). It's BAD when that happens. I mated these with a Nakamichi PA-300 (30W x 2) - through an audiocontrol EQX. I also put 82uf of cap as a highpass filter. These speakers don't respond well to clipped amp output! You'll hear a terrible high pitched ringing, and sibilance on sssss's. Turn your amp down, or your processor output a bit. Once EQ'd and RTA'd - the speakers are absolutely awesome. Very crisp accurate highs without breaking up, loud volume, incredible cymbals and vocals.

These speakers sound great. I just installed them in like 5 minutes. Crutchfield said that they wouldnt fit in my Saab 9-3 but they fit great, without modification
