BA S35 - wonderful upgrade speakers,
By Michael Thomas (Oregon USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Boston Acoustics S35 3 1/2" S Series Coaxial Speaker (Personal Computers)
To start, I have a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee that came stock with the Boston Acoustics 'premium' sound system - six speakers with DSP amplifier. I blew the front 3.5" dash speakers. I bought a pair of Boston Acoustics S35 speakers to replace the blown BA stock speakers.
And as a reference point, I have just had my hearing tested as part of my annual physical exam process. I have excellent hearing with no hearing loss at either end of the spectrum. So I can hear LOL. What amazing little speakers!! I thought the system sounded pretty good as it was (before the front speakers blew), but with the S35s, it's like a blanket was lifted. What new clarity that I had not experienced before. And the sound seems better separated, if that makes any sense. The way the BA premium systems is in the Jeep, the front door speakers are woofers only and the dash speakers handle the front midrange and tweeting. The rear door speakers are 2-way. The speakers were about literally a drop in replacement. I had to snip the stock connector off and splice in the new connector wires with the provided wire splice lugs. Otherwise the S35s fit perfectly in the stock hole and I reused the stock mounting screws. Very easy. Great improvement to my system!!

I bought these along with Boston Acoustics SL65's to go in my PT Cruiser. You need to dremel out the hole a tad, mostly the bottom of the hole, but they then drop in. I got the setup without planning, and without knowing much about high end sound quality in car audio. I eventually plan to have a 3way setup up front - right now its 80ish HZ and up on the SL65's, and 600hz or so on up for these. I should really have the SL65's bandpass - and cut it off around 750, leaving the S35's at 600 and up.
Excellent sound quality for the price. You MUST filter out just about everything below about 500hz - or you'll hit this speakers xmax (excursion limit). It's BAD when that happens. I mated these with a Nakamichi PA-300 (30W x 2) - through an audiocontrol EQX. I also put 82uf of cap as a highpass filter. These speakers don't respond well to clipped amp output! You'll hear a terrible high pitched ringing, and sibilance on sssss's. Turn your amp down, or your processor output a bit. Once EQ'd and RTA'd - the speakers are absolutely awesome. Very crisp accurate highs without breaking up, loud volume, incredible cymbals and vocals.

These speakers sound great. I just installed them in like 5 minutes. Crutchfield said that they wouldnt fit in my Saab 9-3 but they fit great, without modification

These are very good for what they are: 3.5" coaxial speakers mean to fit in factory speaker locations. The treble and mids sound almost as good to me as decent components (CDT, for example), but don't expect frequency response below the spec'd 100 Hz. They don't have much mid-bass hit, but again, they're small speakers, meant for factory locations. Use these w/ a good set of 6.5" mids and a decent powered sub and you're got a much-improved listening experience vs. most stock systems.

I bought these to upgrade the factory speakers in my 2008 Saab 9-3 with the standard 150W audio system. The sound is much brighter and pleasing to listen to. They were easy to install and fit in the same location as the factory speakers.

Boston Acoustics S35 3 1/2" 2 way speakers fit the factory location of my 2006 Chrysler 300C without modification or problems except for the wiring connection. It is necessary to cut the factory connector off and wire on the speaker connector supplied with the speaker. This is quite simple except that the wires do not have the samer color code right to left, so a certain amount of trial and error is required.
The packaging caused concern when received because the packages containing the speakers looked like a cheap knockoff, something made in Taiwan / China to look like a Boston Acoustics product. Then I realized that everything is made in Taiwan / China, and they all look like cheap knockoff anyway. I went ahead and installed the speakers and allowed a day or two for breakin, and I am quite pleased with the highs produced by these speakers, and their overall fidelity. The "Kicker" factory system in the Chrysler is very biased twords bass production, leaving the trebel end of the music spectrum to these 3 speakers in the dash. The factory Kicker 3 1/2" speakers in the dash did not produce the 20K Hz they are rated for and required replacement because snare drums, cymbals, flutes, cowbells etc in the were not reproduced by the factory speaker. Overall I would give this speaker a 9 of 10 for clarity, high frequency reproduction, and quality. I would not hesitate to buy Boston Acoustics products in the future.

These speakers work out very well in the dash of my 1994 Cavalier. They sound crisp and lifelike without sounding harsh and at only $46, don't know anyone can beat that.

Bought these speakers to replace the worn out stock infinity dash speakers in my Plymouth Prowler. By them self they, being just 3.5 inches, can not reproduce a full spectrum of sound but added in to a system with other larger speakers they certainly enhance the high end. These speakers are providing clear, crisp top end in my setup.

I own a brand new vehicle and had stock 3.5 speakers in the front dash. I replaced those with these and WOW! They made an extreme improvement in sound quality. The mids and highs are simply amazing even at low volume. A fantastic upgrade for my vehicle!

Bought these to replace the dash speakers in a 2008 Dodge Avenger. Another site (Crutchfield) stated these speakers would bolt right in, obviously they were dead wrong. After a bit of modification to the dash speaker baskets I got them to drop in and boy what a difference! The sound is amazing just from replacing the dash speakers! I'm thinking on replacing all the factory speakers with Bostons!
