5.0 out of 5 stars Great Guide
I'm no expert on the Boston Terrier, which is why I like this book. We're planning on adopting one this summer, and I've been hunting for good, user-friendly BT books. This one covers everything, it's to the point, and the last four chapters are full of good advice for any dog owner, regardless of the breed. I wanted a manual I could refer to over and over again ~ this...

I bought this book hoping to learn more about the breed and their special needs. However only the first half of the book was breed specific. The shopping lists and breed history was interesting, but I still have many unanswered questions about basic care. The second half had basic training tips that applies to all breeds. This may be a good book for someone who is looking for a general overview of the breed, but if you're looking for a detailed manual about how to care for and train a puppy, adult, and senior Boston Terrier, this book isn't it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book to Learn About Bostons, July 4, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Boston Terrier: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet (Hardcover)
I bought this book after it being recommended by a breeder. It was exactly the kind of book that I was wanting. It provides specifics on the health problems, grooming tactics, and eating habits of the dog, which were the most important subjects I was looking for. The latter part of the book discusses how to enjoy your dog, though it isn't specifically directed toward the Boston. This is a great book and a must-have for any Boston Terrier owner.

5.0 out of 5 stars FILLED WITH GOOD AND USEFUL INFORMATION, September 17, 2011
This review is from: The Boston Terrier: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet (Hardcover)
This is a work which will be beneficial to those who are just starting the adventure of raising, training and adjusting their lives to the world of Boston Terriers. There are a couple of facts and such which the potential purchaser needs to take note of though.

First, like so many other books which deal with breed specific dogs, you will find that at least one half of the book contains information which is not breed specific, but rather information which will apply to all dogs in general, from the time they are a puppy well into adulthood. This in my opinion is a good thing. There is a vast amount of misinformation out there concerning making a dog; any dog, a part of your life and all of us need to know this information.

Second, the first half of this book is indeed breed specific. In this case it addresses the Boston Terrier. Like any breed of dog, these little dogs do indeed have specific needs, in particular as to their personality and what it takes to receive the most pleasure from your new companion. This information is helpful for both the owner and the animal. Boston Terriers are quirky in many ways - to say the least. They can be, and indeed many times are, a very high energy dog. Their curiosity knows no bounds. They are also one of the most loveable and loyal dogs you are likely to encounter. Many of them have a stubborn streak in them that many folks find hard to deal with. Patience is the key word here and this work goes along way in stressing this.

While in general these are classified as small companion dogs, it needs to be noted that they come in basically three different sizes; small, medium and large - a lot like clothing and shoes. It should also be noted that each of these little guys have unique personality traits. Whether they are born with this, or whether they develop these little quirks I know not. At present we have two of them. They are both sweet and loveable dogs but their personalities differ greatly even though they were raised together in identical conditions. One thing I do recommend, as this book does, if at all possible try to meet and observed the sire and dame of your new pet. Also avoid like the plague those dogs that are products of "puppy mills." This is especially true of older dogs. This of course only holds true unless you are interested in the rescue process in which case you have a whole different set of "problems" to worry about. These problems are nothing that cannot be overcome with loving care, but never-the-less it takes special skill and devotion on your part in many cases....it is rewarding, that is true, but do be prepared.

All in all, this is a good solid book with a lot of good and helpful information. Is it the only book you should have on your shelf dealing with these wonderful little animals? No, but it is a very good start.
