Book Description

February 2, 2005
From the South End Grounds to Fenway Park, from Boston Garden to Gillette Stadium, the history of sports in Boston has been tied to the parks and arenas in which the teams have met and the athletes competed. Beloved but abandoned sites such as the Huntington Avenue Grounds, Braves Field, and the Garden are recalled by Boston fans with the same fondness Brooklynites feel for Ebbets Field, while contemporary stadiums maintain the region's proud athletic tradition. This is the first book to tell the story of sports in Boston through the stories of these venues.

Foulds gives pride of place to the region's nine best-known sites, with numerous anecdotes about such fabled teams as the Red Sox, Bruins, and Celtics along the way. But he also considers parks that have been all but forgotten, such as the Worcester County Fairgrounds, once an official National League ballpark despite the presence of a tree in left field, or Lincoln Park, the former home of black baseball in Boston. And in addition to such milestones as the first World Series and the achievements of the great Cy Young, he also recalls the Hub's support for soccer, tennis, lacrosse and, of course, the Boston Marathon.

In this illustrated history, Foulds documents the variety and vibrancy of Boston sports for over a century. This history, he shows, is firmly grounded in the stories of the sites where the games have been played.

Sites include:

Nine Wonders of the Boston Sports World: South End Grounds, Huntington Avenue Grounds, Fenway Park, Braves Field, Boston Arena, Boston Garden, FleetCenter, Foxboro Stadium, Gillette Stadium

The Forgotten Parks: Dartmouth Street Grounds, Congress Street Grounds, Worcester County Agricultural Fairgrounds, Sam Mark's Stadium, Balmoral Park, Lincoln Park

Pressed Into Service: Harvard Stadium, Revere Beach Bicycle Tracks, Malden Stadium, GE Field, Everett Stadium, Boston College Alumni Stadium, Walter Brown Arena, Volpe Center, Bowditch Field, Olympic venues, and stadiums in Lynn and Lowell.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Volumes have been written about Fenway Park, the fabled home of the Boston Red Sox, and Boston Garden, the site of countless memorable hockey and basketball games. But the history of Boston's big league teams also unfolded at other venues, some of which opened with parades and fanfare, only to be abandoned, replaced and all but forgotten. Foulds, a local historian, takes a fond look at Boston's sports palaces, focusing on nine of the most significant sites and a number of lesser ones. Readers with a strong sense of Boston's geography will get the most out of this amply illustrated book, but anyone who appreciates the important role that Beantown's teams played in the development of pro sports will learn a thing or two. Baseball draws much of its unique charm from its setting, so it's natural that Foulds leads off with several chapters on ballparks. Fenway, dating from 1912, is just one of several sites that hosted big league baseball in Boston. Foulds offers vivid descriptions of the long-gone ballparks that gave birth to the Braves (who left town in 1953) and the Sox, chronicling the on-field milestones and giving readers a feel for what it must have been like to watch a game amid the raucous crowds of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Other sports receive attention, too. Boston hosted a series of basketball and football teams in the early years, and Foulds pays homage to them. He also looks at a number of more obscure sports, such as early professional soccer leagues and even lacrosse teams. At a time when Boston's baseball fanatics hold center stage thanks to the Red Sox's first championship since 1918, this book provides an entertaining look at the roots of New England's sports mania.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well done, lots of information not found anywhere else, March 12, 2007

This review is from: Boston's Ballparks and Arenas (Hardcover)
This is a well-researched book that goes into much more (and better) detail than I expected when I purchased it. I had already read quite a bit about Fenway, the old Huntington Avenue Grounds and the old South End Grounds, but this book added some very interesting pieces of trivia. The author also covers "forgotten" ballparks and arenas, which were very interesting and new for even an "expert" like me. ;)

The only thing I felt the book lacks is more pictures and photos, especially of the parks and arenas that are now just memories, but that could be more due to lack of information than to a decision not to include them. Overall, I highly recommend this book for any Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics, Patriots or general sports history buff.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but with some gaps, June 6, 2005

This review is from: Boston's Ballparks and Arenas (Hardcover)
There's a lot to say about this book that's positive. It's quite comprehensive, as it mentions a variety of sites (not only in Boston but all over eastern Massachusetts) that hosted pro sports teams, delving into little-known leagues and short-tenured teams. I also enjoyed the chapters on the stadia that preceded Fenway and Braves Field, as it gave some depth to Boston's baseball history.

What I had some difficulty with was the balance between talking about the teams and talking about the venues. You can't do one without the other, of course, but at times I felt like the balance went too far into team and player histories (most notable in the Fenway chapter, but also at play in the Foxboro chapter). I also thought that the newer places got short shrift; less has happened in the FleetCenter or Gillette Stadium, but I'd think that there are greater opportunities to build the chapters around sources like media reports and interviews.

There were also some minor issues which, while not incredibly disturbing, did leave me feeling strange. For example, former Celtic Jim Loscutoff has his name spelled at least two different ways in the book. Nancy Kerrigan is mentioned as an Olympic medal winner, but it doesn't say what type of medal she won - not a crucial piece of information, but you'd think a sports history book would mention it. The WUSA is mentioned, but not that the league folded. As I said, minor things, but they add up.
