Wonderful thirties music,

This review is from: The Boswell Sisters Collection, Vol. 2, 1925-32 (Audio CD)
This is, perhaps, the least essential of the five volumes in this series, but that does not make it any less entertaining. Most of their hits can be found on Volumes 1 and 5, while Volume 3 contains many songs that were (and are) favorites with their fans even though they weren't hits. Of the remaining two volumes, volume 4 is perhaps slightly stronger than this one.As is characteristic of this series, some tracks appear on more than one volume. For example, OK America parts 1 and 2, California medley part 2, Lawd you made the night too long and Was that the human thing to do? All appear on Volume 3, which I've already reviewed. Although the recording dates match up, it seems that they are different takes because the track lengths differ. Nevertheless, there is much great music here, including Don't tell him and their distinctive version of the often-covered Stardust. Neither of these songs can be found on the other volumes in this fine series. The Boswell sisters have been an inspiration and an influence to many that followed. Brilliant though many of them were, none of them ever quite recaptured the Boswell sound.

These are rare gems by the jazz vocal group The Boswell Sisters, with some great solos by Connee Boswell(scat vocal), as well as the Dorsey Brothers, Eddie Lang, Joe Venuti, and other jazz legends... A must buy for classic jazz fans..

All three volumes of this collection are first-rate. The sound is the best I've heard on any of their releases. If you haven't heard the Sisters, do yourself a favor!
