Product Description

A plant native to South India and from the same family as ginger, Turmeric has been used as a spice, dye, and as a health remedy. It's been used in both Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for centuries for a variety of health concerns including blood purification and female issues. Most recently, however, Turmeric has been the subject of studies for its ability to provide joint comfort, ease morning stiffness and promote smoother, easier walking. It also aids digestion because it helps increase bile production and stimulates the protective mucus of the stomach.

In order to receive the full health benefits of turmeric it is recommended that you take 2000 mg per day. That typically means about 4 pills per day which can get rather expensive. I was originally taking the Nature's Way turmeric but decided to switch brands to save some money. The Botanic Choice is clearly the cheapest brand of turmeric on this website but it is clearly cheap for a good reason. The quality is terrible. I highly doubt that it contains more than 1% curcumin which is the most important component of turmeric. The Nature's Way brand contains at least 95% curcumin. I also tried opening one of the Botanic Choice gel caps and the powder doesn't even taste like turmeric when compared to the ground turmeric on my spice rack.

I have a heart condition that causes frequent palpitations or at least it used to. When I began taking the Nature's Way turmeric the palpitations all but disappeared. Then I switched to Botanic Choice and the palpitations not only reappeared but began occurring more frequently. I should also mention that on the bottom of the bottle is a sticker labeled "WARNING: This product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm." Regardless of whether you're concerned about reproductive problems this product is supposed to benefit your health not harm it. If it's not 100% natural then don't take it. The only listed ingredients other than turmeric are gelatin and magnesium stearate. If you're not familiar with the ingredient magnesium stearate perhaps you would be more familiar with its common name...soap scum. Seriously, look it up. I'm not sure if the warning is referring to one of those ingredients or perhaps the plastic bottle itself but either way I don't feel safe taking it and it certainly is not helping my health or heart condition. I'll be switching back to Nature's Way or I might try organic turmeric powder instead.

A co-worked told me about this product, when I mentioned I have Fibromyalgia. I have been using this for about 6 months and have found that I have less pain and have more energy. I have heard others claim the same.

Both of the best reasons for why you should never buy this product have already been mentioned, but both of the reasons are important, so I'll re-hash:

The primary reason that you should never buy this turmeric formulation is because it contains magnesium stearate, which has been linked to birth defects and various other reproductive issues. Saving the few extra bucks is not worth the risk, unless you don't plan on having more children. Then again, if it isn't good for those parts of your body, why would it be good for the rest?

The sub-primary reason that you should never buy this turmeric formulation is because the quality is crap. If you buy this, please also buy something like the Organic India turmeric formula. When they arrive in the mail, open each bottle and sniff. You will smell turmeric in one of them, and it ain't this one. Then open up a capsule from each and taste. One of capsule innards will taste like turmeric, and it ain't this one. I'm not trying to say that there is no turmeric/curcumin in the Botanic Choice capsule, I'm just saying that the proof of quality is in the pudding, and this pudding sucks.

By the way... turmeric pudding? Yuck.

The final reason I've come here to write a review is that I, myself, ignored the two primary reasons and was lured by the siren's call of this being cheap as heck. So, I tried using it. After a few weeks, sores starting popping up in my mouth and specifically on my tongue. This is the only part of my diet and/or vitamin regimen that I had changed, and as soon as I stopped ingesting these, the sores went away. I went back to Organic India turmeric (and have since also used New Chapter turmeric), and the sores have not reappeared. It may not be a common reaction, but it was not a pleasant reaction.

So I hope the two lessons you learn from this review are never, ever buy this and turmeric pudding is a dangerous idea.

There is a warning sticker in the bottom of the bottle that says "This product contains a chemical known to the state of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm." I did not notice this label until I read a similar review for the product which was after I took couple of bottles of the product. I discontinued immediately. I purchased this product in hope of helping my health. I did not know that this also can hurt my health. I am really angry that the warning is place where most users will not see it!!! This is a nasty practice. I also don't understand why any additives need to be added to turmeric anyway!

If you deal with sore joints like I do, this is such a valuable herb. It helps with the inflammation so much. It's not hard on your belly like NSAIDS. One extra bonus??? My cholesterol profile went from 198 to 135 in less than one year. Yes, I know Turmeric is also responsible for that extra bonus. My father-in-law takes the prescription meds to lower his cholesterol and he is suffering from memory loss directly associated with the meds. I am not and will not. Turmeric is one vital herb in our life.
