Product Description

When luffa gourds are harvested young at 4-6" long, they are a sweet, tasty vegetable that can be stir-fried, sauteed, or cooked with meats or tofu just as you would zucchini squash or okra. They can also be sliced or diced in a salad like a cucumber. Mature gourd seeds can be roasted. The young flowers and foliage can be cooked for greens (great with butter and a pinch of curry). Of course, luffa gourds are also commonly used for another purpose, and what fun it is to grow your own sponges! They can be used for exfoliating and cleaning your skin, scrubbing dishes, and cleaning the barbecue grill! Crop time is 110 days.

5.0 out of 5 stars We have sponges!, September 30, 2008
By

This review is from: Luffa Gourd Heirloom Seeds (Baby Product)
I didnt actually think we would get sponges out of this. I thought for sure that we would be making funny looking bird houses out of these, but sure enough-- we let the suckers turn color on the vines, and after cutting them off and letting them dry out, we peeled back the skin and found spongy material inside. The seeds just fell out, and we rinsed them, bleached them, and now we have cute little sponges to give for gifts or use at home. Prolific and wonderful. Once danger of frost is over, just stick them in the ground about 1 1/2 inch and water well and then ignore for about a month except for watering and you'll get a sprout. Dont even bother with seed starter mixes-- they'll rot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very fast grower, great producer, easy to grow, January 10, 2011

This plant took over the whole back of my yard and vines grew 15'+ tall in trees nearby. Had to harvest with clippers on a 12' pole! Excellent producer, resistant to 100+ degree summer heat of coastal south Texas. Make sure you give this climber plenty of room when planting.
