One of the most original albums I've heard in a long time!!!,

For those of you unfamiliar with Girl In A Coma, do yourself a favor. Buy this album and get acquainted. This three piece powerhouse out of San Antonio is one of the most original new acts to come out in a long time. Singer Nina Diaz has been described as the female version of Morissey. I definitely hear the resemblance, but I would throw in a little of Kurt Cobain as well. Her soaring vocals, blistering guitar work and intelligent lyrics form the heart of this band. Big sister Phanie pounds the skins like a madwoman and Jenn Alva fills out the lower registers on the Bass guitar. Having had the pleasure to catch these girls live in San Antonio several times, as well as catching a show in March in Chicago where they opened for the Pogues, I can honestly say I've been blown away by their performances. They recently caught the attention of Joan Jett while playing in New York and that led to their signing a deal with Blackheart Records. Hopefully, they will get the promotion they deserve and this album will get a lot of airplay. All you need to do is listen to the first three tracks and you will be hooked! So again, do yourself a favor and check out the CD. And if these girls happen to be playing anywhere in your vicinity, get up off the couch and head to the show. You will NOT be disappointed.

I'm not sure how this cd came into my possession, but I know I looked at the packaging and and band name and photos and thought to myself: this is probably going to suck... goth-punk chicks with more tattoos and attitude than ability.
But when I finally got around to listening to it, I started hearing what sounded to me sort of like an amped-up Jolie Holland fronting a more tuneful Sleater-Kinney. Power-trio guitar/drums/bass, each player with a lot of ideas to keep the songs from all sounding the same, nicely-sung harmonies and a heady mix of ragged aggressiveness peppered with effective swaths of instrospection and some nice production touches here and there. For me the only drawbacks are the lengthy playing time (almost an hour, I would have left off the 6+ minute meandering acoustic track at the end for instance), and the somewhat pedestrian lyrics. Nonetheless, in my book G.I.A.C. is about 10 times cooler than the over-hyped Yeah Yeah Yeahs, for instance. Although looking at their website I see that this ripped-nylons and tats and spiky hair image seems to be at odds with the "we're appearing at Best Buy" and "makeup provided by Mac". Dude, get a GUITAR sponsorship or something! I write this on the eve of their new album coming out and, from checking their website, a solid couple of months of touring. I wish them the best and will keep my fingers crossed, hoping they don't get swallowed up by the evil Music Biz Machine, and tell YOU, oh fan of awesome melodic emotive indie guitar rock, why not get this (very affordable) album?

When I first heard of Girl in a Coma, I thought the name was pretty lame, but after listening to just one track off their cd (their cell) I was hooked. Their music is like being inside a dream, I have to admit they've become one of my favorite bands. I bought the album July of last year, and it hasn't left the cd player in my car or my ipod. I urge you to take a listen, or you'll miss out on something great.

I can't say anything else but, that I liked this. Great sound with lots of influences heard but, not copied so, it was a refreshing new experience.

Love it & love them! The lyrics are deep, interesting, & evoke all kinds of raw emotion. The vocals are superb some of the best vocals male or female. Their songs are beautiful & unique. It's refreshing & different in a terrific way. Perfect blend of melodic talent w/a kick of punk. They are amazing live too, if you get the chance go see them in person.

This is the only CD that I've listened to where the mastering is so loud that it actually distorts! All dynamic range is crushed into a muddy mess. I'm pretty tolerant of this stuff, but this is just incredible. It weird, because it seems well produced...it just sounds like I'm listening to it on a blown out car stereo.
I really love the music, and it's a great blend of pop with enough of an edge to make it interesting. It's nice to see a group of young people taking influence from interesting music and making it their own.

The band Girl In A Coma is fantastic.I love every song on this cd.There isn't one song not to love they are just so great. I love these girls they are one of my top favorite bands. They have they're own sound and they know who they are. Nina has one of the most unbeleivable voices I've ever heard.
