Book Description

January 3, 2004
This catalogue is published in conjunction with the major Fall 2003 exhibition organized by the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris. This important and unprecedented exhibition covers the entire career of the Florentine master with over 40 exceptional masterpieces gathered from major museums around the world.

Sandro Botticelli was one of the leading painters of the Florentine Renaissance who developed a highly personal style characterized by elegant execution, sense of melancholy and strong emphasis on line. This monograph presents a selection of Botticelli's paintings and drawings, including extraordinary masterpieces such as the Mystic Nativity, St. Augustine in his Studio, Pallade and the Centaur, Annunciation and Madonna and Child, as well as a selection of works by other Renaissance painters like Leonardo da Vinci, Piero di Cosimo, Filippo and Filippino Lippi.

5.0 out of 5 stars the catalogue of the most recent Botticelli exhibition, April 5, 2004
By
This review is from: Botticelli: From Lorenzo the Magnificent to Savonarola (Hardcover)
This is the catalogue of the most recent Botticelli exhibition in Paris and Florence. It comprises 6 essays by important Renaissance scholars and individual description of the works of art present in the exhibition. The reader is offered, therefore, a comprehensive and useful survey of Botticelli scholarship, sometimes with somewhat contrasting points of view. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone interested in broadening their knowledge and understanding of Botticelli. I don't think, however, that it is a good introductory book to the artist, as it leaves out quite a lot of important works of art that were not present in the exhibition ("Primavera", "The Birth of Venus", "Mars and Venus", etc).

This review is from: Botticelli: From Lorenzo the Magnificent to Savonarola (Hardcover)
Good reproductions, enjoy looking at the book, although I haven't done much reading in it yet...I admit to ordering it for the reproductions! I wish color reproductions of the "Birth of Venus" and a couple of other works were included.
