5.0 out of 5 stars even better than the first!
True talent! How a band like this could not have hit the big time after their first (and only) two albums is beyond me. This is quite possibly my favorite CD of all time. It's an incredible shame to see a band like this break up after an "unsuccessful" second album (especially when I look at some of today's "talent"). The music is a bit more on the...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good album, not as good as the first
The first Refreshments album is without a doubt one of my top 10 favorite of all time. Maybe it's becuase of that I expected so much out of this one, and I feel just a little let down. Played back-to-back, you notice there's more instrumentation and a way different production feel on this one, and it seems much less spontaneous. Seems the producer brought every level...

It's an incredible shame to see a band like this break up after an "unsuccessful" second album (especially when I look at some of today's "talent"). The music is a bit more on the serious side than the first record, but the boys come through with incredible sound and lyrics that stick in your mind. Any fan of music would do well to add this one to their collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Still a damn good cd..., October 7, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Bottle & Fresh Horses (Audio CD)
"The Bottle and Fresh Horses" continues in the same path where the Refreshments left off from their first album "Fizzy Fuzzy Big and Buzzy". Although this album isn't as much fun as the bank robbing sound you find in their first album, it still rips a meaning to the heart, it has more of traveling sound by horse from bar to bar looking for the right woman. Yeah! sounds great this album deserves more of a 4 and a half stars rather than just 4, but falls short of 5 because of their great first album. Every song is unique, from the meaningful lyrics found in "Sin Nombre", to the bashing of an ex-girl in "Fonder & Blonder", not to mention a catchy-twangy "Horses" song, and the stop dead at a bar depressed sound found in "Una Soda". The Refreshments have it all and got better in their lyrical background on this one, overall a damn good cd. Ride away with this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars ONe of the best albums by anyone ever, October 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Bottle & Fresh Horses (Audio CD)
When I first played this cd I was kind of disappointed. It was not as partyish as FFB&B. Then the more I played it the better and better it sounded and now I can say without a doubt that this cd is definitely better than their first one. "Heaven or the Highway out of Town" and "broken Record" are two of the best songs anyone have ever written. Check out this lyric, "So you took that other guy on your caribean cruise while I stayed home and cried into my bottle of pills." Now *that's* great writing! Even though The Refreshments have since broken up do yourself a huge favor and buy both cd's while you still can. btw, the Peace Makers cd has just come out and I got it two days ago. I have the double cd with the second one being live and it sounds good although I'm still growing into it. If you're expecting The rEfreshments, don't. The Peace makers cd is definitely more subdued although still full of great writing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Tunes, February 8, 2006
This review is from: Bottle & Fresh Horses (Audio CD)
Are these boys from Arizona? Great tunes with a splash of Mexican. When I was mixing some border sounds for a CD it came in handy. Really rocks along and gets you down the road to work with some catchy lyrics. Looking forward to their next effort. Played some tracks for some friends and they all seemed to like 'em.

4.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars-- Super album, and Roger Clyne still rocks!, August 13, 2005
This review is from: Bottle & Fresh Horses (Audio CD)
A close runner-up to FFBB, this is an excellent CD. Although out of the gate, Tributary Otis sounds almost like a Gin Blossoms single, the Refreshments get back to business with classic-sounding barn-burners like Preacher's Daughter and Wanted, before settling down a bit to my favorite on the CD, Sin Nombre, which once again brings you back to the Southwest feeling saddle-sore like the song's cowboy. The rest of the CD is great.

It's too bad the Refreshments broke up, but Roger Clyne is still rocking with his band the Peacemakers and putting out great music, upholding the quality in the Refreshments' work.

Still, you can't go wrong with either of the Refreshments CD's, and The Bottle & Fresh Horses is a superb listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Critique from another musician, December 8, 1999

The Refreshments' 2nd offering is truly amazing. I have their first release and the second is even better. Yes, great lyrics, but also great music that keeps my left foot thumping while driving down the road. It's a shame the band broke up! But get their 2 CD's now. You'll enjoy them.

5.0 out of 5 stars jaw dropping second effort, October 23, 1999
By A Customer

how a band like this does not become huge is beyond me. this cd is every bit as good as their debut, but once again, no recognition. songs like "fonder and blonder," "wanted," and "broken record" are just plain amazing. one of the best bands of the decade.

5.0 out of 5 stars increadable CD from a rejected band, April 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Bottle & Fresh Horses (Audio CD)
Firstly: the CD is MUCH better than their first. The band has matured, and although the second Cd doesn't have as many crazy songs (check out 2 and 5 for crazy songs) as the first, it is even better. Secondly: For those who don't know the Refreshments broke up partially because their second CD didn't sell as much as the first. To those who like the first, but didn't give the second a chance, listen to Banditos - they're talking about ye. Anyone that liked the first NEEDS THE SECOND. IT'S EVEN BETTER! Refreshments rule.

Played back-to-back, you notice there's more instrumentation and a way different production feel on this one, and it seems much less spontaneous. Seems the producer brought every level up but lost that good fun no-frills sound in the process. Some songs I'll usually skip, like Broken Record (annoying) but others are very catchy, listenable. These guys write good hooks. And "Fonder and Blonder" has got to be one of the most wicked ex-girlfriend songs ever. If you've never bought a Refreshments disc, try the other one first. If you have, this is a good follow-up but don't expect to be bowled over.

4.0 out of 5 stars another all time favorite!!!, May 15, 2011
if you havent heard the refreshments before then you have been truly deprived, this band should have been bigger than they were but sadly they were dropped from there label.this album is overlooked and underated,i listen to this cd as much as ffbb and it never gets old.you could say that the music takes a different vibe then fizzy fuzzy and thats not a bad thing at all!i wish that the refreshments were still around today but the good thing is at least roger clyne i still putting out music with the peacemakers!
