Bottle Tree Is In Full Bloom,
By John Lee "John Lee" (Mentone, AL and McKinney, Tx) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bottle Tree (Paperback)
I read Jennifer Horne's latest collection of poems in one extremely, satisfying sitting. If you read much poetry you know how hard it is to find a book where every poem is either good or great. Horne has produced just such a book.
Bottle Tree is full of the body, breath, beauty, and nature. It has the flavor of the old and new South written in smooth, sultry language that any reader will readily relate to. It is never ponderous or pretentious as so much modern poetry tries to be. Horne's poetry is more in the vein of Mary Oliver, William Stafford or Robert Bly. If you like them you will love her. If you don't like them you will still love her because her voice is as unique as the way she divides her book into Bottles instead of chapters. It made me-a writer of prose-want to write poetry and re-read her book again and again so maybe I could learn how to do it. And isn't that one of the best things you can say about a writer? John Lee, author of The Flying Boy and When The Buddha Met Bubba. |
