I'll be frank...I'm not the biggest fan of country in the "traditional" sense. I find it fairly boring, sometimes bordering on annoying. However, I am a fan of roots/folk/gospel music--like the soundtrack for the movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" with its roots-country sensibilities, gospel influences, and sometimes darker themes and melodies.
This song, I'm happy to say, has it all. It has a heavy gospel influence, and the chain effects, snare drums, and backing vocals in the song give it a surprisingly old sound--like something from the Civil War era. What's more, it has a suitably dark theme and dark melody, with incredible leading vocals that really make the song shine.
Delta Rae has a real gem here in this eerie blast from the past. If you, like me, are no huge fan of "modern" country, this song can easily be a favorite. Best of luck to Delta Rae, and I hope to see more music this incredible in the future!

What starts off sounding like a traditional gospel song with a few sound effects for ambiance quickly turns expectation on its head with absolutely mighty percussion and extraordinary arrangement. Delta Rae's "Bottom of the River" is fluid, powerful, like the titular river, and gives the feeling of sinking and swimming as it slips through various genres and creative sounds to achieve an impressive piece of music that's worth far more than its price tag - get it free while you can, and watch out for Delta Rae in the future!

I never heard of Delta Rae, but when I did this song made me get more...eerie at some points, but passionate straight thru, cool stuff.

the bottom of the river is actually called the "thalweg" if you are into hydrology stuff and the tune puts me in the thalweg mood.

I love old time-y songs, and this one is the best I have heard in a while. It is heard to get it out of your head once you listen to it, and sticks with you.

I'm not super big on the rest of the album except for the song with a guest appearance by lindsey buckingham, but, I do really enjoy this song. The video is fun too. I enjoy the stomping rhythm and beats of the song. Check it out if your looking for something new.

Loved the haunting lyrics and video. Hidden messages that are different for everyone. Music is great, but video even better.

They have definitely got some "soul in their bowl" and it was wonderful to hear a song that could have been hundreds of years old, speaking to a pain few can understand. They killed this song.

This song caught my attention on Nashville, and I enjoy it well enough it is on a regular rotation in my ipod.
