4.0 out of 5 stars Where did they run off to?
I took the cd off my shelf, dusted it off and pushed PLAY!! Wow, it's been 8 years since these gals released the first (of two) cds? Before there was Destiny's Child in the late 90s/early 00s, there was a trio named Brownstone. Whose voices blended together beautifully. Unfortunately they appear to have gone. 3.0 out of 5 stars Voice from Heaven
I truly love this CD. it has style, flavor and more. I also need some help guys. When "I Can't Tell You Why" was released as a single, the radio was playing a version which cannot be found on the CD Album or Casette Album. Does anyone know where I can get this CD Maxi Single or R&B Version of the song. It was GREAT!

Before there was Destiny's Child in the late 90s/early 00s, there was a trio named Brownstone. Whose voices blended together beautifully. Unfortunately they appear to have gone. It amazes me the ones you don't want to stick around, do and those that you want be around for years to come, seem to disappear.

Some of my favorite tracks on the album are:
If You Love Me, Sometimes Dancin', Pass the Lovin', and Grapevyne.

From the Bottom Up-consists of R&B, soulful with a little very light hip-hop tracks. 12 tracks that one can tolerate from beginning to the end...

5.0 out of 5 stars Y'wanna know what a girl group should sound like???, November 16, 2002
This review is from: From the Bottom Up (Audio CD)
Then, take a listen to Brownstone. These girls can SANG the pants off...well, maybe, I shouldn't say that!

The trio's harmonious voices just bring shudders up and down the proverbial spine like no group before or since.

Why they didn't ascend to the musical heights and become legend is one of music's great mysteries.

5.0 out of 5 stars I miss this group, February 23, 2006

I agree this is what a girl group is supposed to sound like. Maybe if they introduced a booty dance and sang more sexually explicit songs they would still be around. It's sad such a talented group fell to the waste sides--but hey, music comebacks are still happening every day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Talent, June 15, 2005

These ladies were more than just another "girl group" they were absolutely stunning. Not since En Vogue have we heard such a perfect blend of voices in music. They may not have had a string of hits like other 90's groups but their voices were something to be very afraid of. I had the great honor to see these ladies perform live as the opener for Patti Labelle in 1995 and let me tell you...I think they left the mics and speakers in pieces. After that concert I bought this cd right away. You wil not be disappointed at all from this cd.

This is just a great album. Their voices are superb, the harmonies are a sheer delight. (And the bass on the first track does evil things to my speakers.) Why this group weren't huge I don't know. This CD occupies vaguely similar territory to some of SWV's stuff but the songs are stronger overall and the whole album is even more enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars From The Bottom Up, April 2, 2006

Ah - from a golden time in music when we had such an abundance of awesomely talented r&b groups, bands & solo artists. Groups like Brownstone, En Vogue & Xscape defined what a true female group should sound like.

I was impressed by the number of tracks that Nichole Gilbert (arguably the best vocalist of the group) wrote/co-wrote and how much of the production she was involved in on this disc. Listening to it again makes me sad about the state of r&b music today but grateful for the time when true artists were allowed to shine.

My favorite tracks are: GRAPEVYNE, IF YOU LOVE ME

I CAN'T TELL YOU WHY (love this song with its excellent arrangements & their tight harmonies)

SOMETIMES DANCIN' (interesting musical production - especially the reagge breakdown & while the lead vocals are great, the backing is kind of boring until they hit the reagge break)

DON'T CRY FOR ME (their individual vocals & group harmonies are beautiful, this song sounds almost like a contemporary inspirational/gospel song)

DEEPER FEELINGS (really pretty slow ballad where they trade lead vocals with tight harmonies a la En Vogue)

HALF OF YOU (pretty balld with Nichole singing lead accompanied by just a piano)

If you're starved for some great r&b and are curious about another female group that came out during the En Vogue/Destiny's Child/TLC era, give Brownstone a try, you won't be disappointed.

Perfect. Gosh these girls can sing. I get goose bumps on every song. You just don't hear voices like that any more. Just perfect. Their second album is perfection as well. Just beautiful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!, May 1, 2005
This review is from: From the Bottom Up (Audio CD)
Brownstone were a 90s group, but they were so underrated. They all have fantastic voices, and that certainly shows in this album. My favourite tracks are If You Love Me, Grapevyne (very gospel-like) the ace Fruit of Life and Sometimes Dancin.
I think they should definitely reunite one day.
Trust me people if you have this CD gathering dust in your loft or wherever, stick it in your CD player and enjoy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A TRUE 90'S CLASSIC!!, December 18, 2004

This cd sends shivers up my spine everytime I listen to it or even think of it. THESE GIRLS CAN SING, just listen to "Don't Cry For Me" to get a sample of what I'm talking about. Back in 8th grade when this cd came out I used to listen to it about 5-10 times a day because I just couldn't get enough of it. Now it's almost a decade later and I still can't get enough of it! I just wish that they were still around today because R&B girl groups aren't what they used to be, and I feel that groups like Destny's Child and others should give thanks to Brownstone and the other 90's groups for paving the way.

These women can SANG!!!!! I have never heard three strong voices blend so perfectly. I am happy to say that I did have the chance to experience Brownstone live and I was blown away with their REAL talent. I so hope that one day we will blessed with a Brownstone Reunion album and tour. I'd be the first in line. Thanks to the women of Brownstone for being great influences on my career.
