4.0 out of 5 stars A smackingly solid anthology for enthusiasts of the genre

3.0 out of 5 stars Book was so-so....
Nothing to OVER the top with this book...but it wasn't all horribly bad either. I think that I just wanted a little bit more umph in it, or perhaps a few extra twists or something. Its good for a vanilla kind of spanking book...so not horrible but not amazing.

In addition to being an author herself, Rachel Kramer Bussel has been making a living editing a number of anthologies of erotic stories in the last few years. With subjects ranging from dominance and submission, to voyeurism, to even the delights (to those who are enthusiasts) of PVC.

In Bottoms Up, Bussel returns for the fourth time to spanking.

This anthology is one of the stronger anthologies in that genre, as well as being one of the stronger anthologies Bussel has edited. She has a good hand as an editor, and by now knows how to balance authors, themes, and story lengths.

I especially appreciated the diversity of authors in this anthology. The writing of erotic stories for publications in these anthologies is something that women seem to have colonized as their own. Openly male authors (I have no doubts that some men write under female pen names) are uncommon, but this anthology sports a significant minority of male writers.

So while you will find stories by stalwarts such as Alison Tyler and Sommer Marsden (two of the best stories in the anthology, in this reviewers opinion), you will also find stories here by Simon Sheppard, Craig J Sorensen and other male writers as well.

The subthemes in spanked run the gamut. We get stories from both sides of the hand or paddle, and stories range from the mostly cerebral to the delightfully and painfully *sharp*. The stories never felt repetitious.

About the only thing I can say about the book is that at 20 stories and 172 pages, its just a tiny bit short, for the price you pay.

If you are a fan of erotic stories, and the theme of spanking is at all interesting to you, I think you will enjoy Bottoms up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Something for Every Cheek, August 19, 2009
This review is from: Bottoms Up: Spanking Good Stories (Paperback)

As an author (Nawashi), I love reading other people's erotica and not only getting turned on by the subject matter but also in the way they tell the stories. Here is my take on Rachel Kramer Bussell's new anthology, "Bottoms Up," and the stories therein.

5.0 out of 5 stars Getting to the bottom of good erotica, August 11, 2009
This review is from: Bottoms Up: Spanking Good Stories (Paperback)
"Bottoms Up" is an intriguing blend of erotica all having one thing in common: spanking. This is the type of anthology that has something to please everyone, whether you're straight, gay, bi, or heteroflexible.

My absolute favorite story was "The Purple Balloon" by Tess Danesi. What I liked about this story was not only was it hot, but that it took a party favor and made it into a very unlikely sex object. Teresa Noelle Roberts does something similar in "Prime Time," making, of all things, math an intrinsic part of a sex session.

If you enjoy a little humor with your erotica, which I do, then be sure not to miss "Lonnie's Licks." You won't know whether to laugh or to, well, you know. The author, Tenille Brown, sure has a way with dialogue. I look forward to seeing more from her.

"A Firm Understanding" by Elizabeth Coldwell was another very original tale, where a woman gets her kicks by seeing her husband with another man. Great outside the box thinking, if you'll pardon my pun.

Bottom line: If you like spanking and original, well-written erotica, be sure to get this book. Just don't read it in public.

Then again, maybe do.

5.0 out of 5 stars It'll redden your cheeks..., October 29, 2009
This review is from: Bottoms Up: Spanking Good Stories (Paperback)
I like to go on vacations. I mean, who doesn't, right? But, not only do I like to take vacations that let me experience other regions, cultures, peoples, I like to take vacations that let my mind step outside of my own personal "me-ness" for a time. I'm not huge on feeling a hand slap my ass, but I've found that I love reading stories about spanking after reading this suberb collection.
Whenever I sat down to read one of the stories(which I usually consumed three or four at a time)I was instantly sliding into the skin of someone who lived for the rush of being spanked.
I'm hard pressed to select any favorites from the table of contents, but I can say without a doubt The Purple Balloon by Tess Danesi was exquisite and I've read it over and over.

Even if spanking isn't your thing I urge you to give this anthology a try. It makes for a sexy, hot, amazing vacation from normal life!

5.0 out of 5 stars another great collection of hot short-stories..., August 16, 2009
This review is from: Bottoms Up: Spanking Good Stories (Paperback)
Between Donna George Storey's "A Thousand Words", writer/editor Rachel Kramer Bussel's "The Spanking Machine", and Gwen Masters' "Helping Those In Need", I am tempted to say that "Bottoms Up" is the best of Ms. Kramer Bussel's books that I have read so far. In addition to those three stories [my favorite being "A Thousand Words"], there are about probably about 20 stories in all... each of which are really hot & well-written. In my opinion, this one is definitely a must-read -- for any fans of smart, well-written, and [of course!] sexy erotica.

5.0 out of 5 stars Whew! My cheeks are red just reading this hot anthology., April 27, 2010

Wow. Just completed this hot and bothersome anthology from Rachel Kramer Bussel, mistress of cupcakes and spanking stories. Once again RKB has assembled a collection of stories that will get into your head and make you appreciate the freedoms of Western civilization. I've read several other of RKB's anthologies and two of her spanking focused anthologies, Naughty Spanking Stories A-Z Volume I and Volume II, and find that this one is the most well balanced of the three I've read, featuring famous name authors and some more obscure ones as well. The stories are gripping and engaging whether told from the perspective of the spanker or spankee, or even from the point of view of an interested observer. My favorite, Reenactment by Zille Defeu, contains details and highlights from someone who obviously knows that SCA also stands for Society of Consenting Adults. I look forward to reading Spanked: Red-Cheeked Erotica which is now waiting on my Kindle, and Please, Sir: Erotic Stories of Female Submission which has been ordered and will be delivered on May 1st.

4.0 out of 5 stars Spanking Good time, September 10, 2009
This review is from: Bottoms Up: Spanking Good Stories (Paperback)
Not since Mother Goose & Grimm has a compilation of short stories gotten me so excited. Bussel does a great job of gathering different stories and different voices for those stories while all have the same common theme... an erotic encounter between a behind and a firm hand. Like Mother Goose before her, she leads us through fantasy story to fantasy story teaching us what is right and what is wrong. And what is right is living out your fantasies and not being ashamed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A spanking good read, August 4, 2009
This review is from: Bottoms Up: Spanking Good Stories (Paperback)
Rock on, Rachel Kramer Bussel! The fourth spanking-based anthology from this dynamo, it's the best yet, in my opinion. You can tell the editor loves the subject matter and the authors she (carefully) selects. The stories run the gamut from nervous first timers to experienced hard(er) players, but they are all hot and sexy reads.

Tess Danesi's "The Purple Balloon" is a particular fave. Danesi crawls inside the mind of a spanking enthusiast and rolls around in there getting dirty. This story is best read aloud to a partner. (Guaranteed sex will follow...)

RKB favorites like Alison Tyler, Stan Kent, Gwen Masters (spanking in a church?!), and Teresa Noelle Roberts lend their erotic voices to the spanking brigade. Jerry Arthur's "Ass Worship" is a must-read -- I've read it three times (so far).

There's something in here for everyone; I give it two enthusiastic thumbs up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hurt so good, July 26, 2009

I really enjoyed how each story is varied and complex, much like the characters - like in Donna George Storey's A Thousand Words, I could feel his shame mixed with all the kinky lust running through his pulsing veins...superb. Or in Alison Tyler's, The Hardest Part, the excrutiating build up and power struggle between the two characters was intense, which made the story sizzle-hot...fabulous. Sommer Marsden's, Bossy had me chuckling, aroused and I could feel each and every hard smack...Wow! Actually, all the stories are amazing in this collection, because I didn't know what was coming next. Every story is a new surprise. It's fun, exciting, kinky and hot. Once you read this book, you'll be searching for a paddle, a wooden spatula, or a lover's hard hand - spanking is good, especially when you've been bad. Enjoy!
