Book Description

September 1, 2009
Job loss. Foreclosure. Relationship woes. Health issues. Dire financial straits. If recent history has taught us anything, it's that nobody goes through life unscathed-no matter how rich, how smart, how talented, or how fortunate they may be. White collar, blue collar, or no collar, there is an undeniable commonality to the raw emotion that strikes people when they are knocked down.

University of Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari has seen the bottom - from two very distinct and very public setbacks-but he has learned that bad situations are only permanent if you allow them to be. Fired from his job as head coach 20 games into his third season with the NBA's New Jersey Nets in 1999, Calipari was publicly humiliated and emotionally devastated. But Calipari never allowed the negative to overcome him or those around him, and he began plotting a course for his first bounce back. It was a journey that took him to the University of Memphis and, in 2008, to the NCAA's marquee event, the men's basketball Final Four.

When that trip culminated in a crushing, overtime defeat in the title game, Calipari began to bounce back again-this time armed with the knowledge and fortitude he gained in overcoming the Nets' firing. One year after that defeat, from where he watched his team lose a nine-point lead with two minutes and twelve seconds left in regulation, Calipari was tabbed as the head coach of college basketball's all-time winningest program, the University of Kentucky Wildcats. In ten years, he went from his lowest low to landing his dream job at a dream program.

What Coach Cal -as players, peers, and fans affectionately call him - learned from his experiences was the importance of having the right attitude when dealing with life's major impediments: with every hard knock comes an occasion to reevaluate and reinvent. Now Coach Cal asks that you join his team of Bounce Backers and allow him the privilege of coaching you through what may, at times, seem to be an insurmountable challenge. With a combination of tough love and understanding, Coach Cal takes you under his wing in much the same fashion he guides the young men who play for him. By becoming an active participant in your own resurrection-through practice exercises and tips from Coach Cal and his deep bench of highly successful people who have survived their own bounce backs-you too will gain the tools and insight to understand that it's never a matter of how far you have fallen, but instead it's about how high you bounce back.

4.0 out of 5 stars A lot to gain from this book July 5, 2012
By KV92192
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a helpful book that provides a lot of good insights on life regardless of your situation. Even if you are not currently trying to "bounce back" from any tragedy or misstep, the tips in this book can be applied to everyday life. Parts of the book come off a little bit redundant, but Coach Cal does a good job of interpreting and applying a similar message to many different situations. I would recommend this book to anyone who is open to tips for being successful in any aspect of life.

The book is a straight forward one written in the self-help genere. Hard work and positive attitude wins, and the message is given in an autobiographical way which will be liked by college basketball fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Than a Coach September 26, 2009
Format:Hardcover
This book is really good and written in the style of how Cal talks, fast streams of consciousness thinking on a level different than most people with no negativity. The book is about recovering from a setback such as a job loss or divorce. He parallels this Trigger Event with his firing from the NJ Nets and the last second loss in the National Championship. He's very successful with this approach as he overlays the lesson with anecdotal stories of his Trigger Event and Bounce Back involving close friends, other coaches and stories of his teams.

If you have NO interest in self improvement, don't worry. Cal's writing style and basketball stories are more than enough to satisfy the basketball fans. You'll be very pleased with this fast, effective read which includes good mentions of his family particularly his wife Ellen who is the rock of the family. Cal may be gone from Memphis but his positive influence on the city will be felt for years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great lessons you can use today... August 31, 2009
Format:Hardcover
I started the book this weekend and am already thinking about some of the lessons in this book. One in particular, about being conscious of how you present yourself right after your trigger event, made so much sense and will stick with me for a long time. Can't wait to see what else is in store.

5.0 out of 5 stars more than a self help book!!! August 31, 2009
Format:Hardcover
This book is so much more than tips on how to succeed in business and life - Coach Cal shares intimate and personal stories that make you feel like his confidante. He uses his invaluable life experiences - failures and successes - as lessons and practical (or practiCAL) tips on how to create your own winning story. Not only an enjoyable read, but a useful handbook for life!
