festival of flanged synths!,

This review is from: Bounce Make Model (Audio CD)
Perhaps Jimmy Edgar is finally proving to be the next step in Detroit's sound after much hype. Bounce, Make, Model is everything about Detroit, mostly at the same time. For a half-hour six-song EP, this says a lot and is infinitely more enjoyable than his first effort for Warp, Access Rhythm. Thank god he's from there or it might be embarrassing. You could easily say that the crunched up-beats owe a lot to Autechre but you have to remember which chicken that egg came from.
"I Wanna Be Your STD" starts off on Edgar's exploration of sleaze and is pure Detroit. Taking the atmospheres of Kenny Larkin and Carl Craig but welding on the grittiest of booty sounds and vocals and glitching it up on an Oval tip, getting infected never sounded like such a fun proposition. Once you've turned the lights down low, "LBLB Detroit" will keep the mood high. Even Prince would take off all his clothes and jump into bed with you to rock out to these tracks and "Sheer, Make, Serve" as well. Upon listening to this, if your favorite tech-head is confused by thoughts of cutting back on records and investing in flowers, some new clothes and maybe some lotions, the more abstract and artistic "Beau" will cool him off. The funk has a similar vibe but in another way as it turns down the sleaze and turns up the beauty. A slow intro explodes into a festival of flanged synths that remind you of the majestic way that Derrick May used to use them but the beats are so fresh and bounceable it really makes you smile. Fu*k your body and your brain and buy this.

Jimmy Edgar - Bounce, Make, Model,
This review is from: Bounce Make Model (Audio CD)
Fun, funky Detroit electro: Jimmy Edgar's BOUNCE MAKE MODEL EP. There's plenty of blipping that goes on, but Edgar's sped-up tongue-in-cheek vocals on "I Want to Be Your STD" contrast the more calm electronics. Carrying on this feel, both "Beau" and "LBLB Detroit" go for a smoother sound, while "Uniform (Citation)" has a bounce to it that is foot-tapping fun, in no small part attributable to the IDM-editing techniques that add a rhythmic flavor all their own. The squeals of "Sheer, Make, Model" remind me a bit of "Windowlicker"-era Aphex Twin, but with much more of a Detroit attitude, but "Inner Citee Color Reprise" stakes out its own funky path.

Edgar's music can only be described as uber minimal soul music with an experimental electro break beat treatment. It's unlike anything I've ever heard. The grooves on Bounce, Make, Model are sexy and gritty but so tastefully put together. Any person who appreciates Kraftwerk, Figurine, Proem, Kettel, Aphex Twin, Matthew Dear or the house sound of Warp Records will likely enjoy this record. This is an EP with 6 tracks and is approximately 30 minutes long, but every track is special. The last track, Inner Citee Color Reprise, is pure genius. The music displays a very high level of contrapuntal sophistication. The use of interesting sounds and use of space is excellent. Almost to a fault, the rhythms are never repetive - the beats seam to stop, start and break at lightning speed.
If you have a high resolution stereo system or really good headphones there is so much to hear and enjoy on this record. If you have speakers with good tight bass and clean highs, it sounds incredible! The samples do not do justice to the masterful production and musicianship. This is hyper sound! This music may not be for every taste or occasion, but if you enjoy innovative, finely crafted toe-tappin electro this is some of the best I've heard.
