Editorial Reviews

On this noteworthy debut, Mills showcases the sparkling banjo playing that he's honed during stints with Doyle Lawson and Ricky Skaggs (who sings lead on the breakneck title track). This is straightforward, hard-charging bluegrass that's more concerned with powerful picking than with innovation. Mills coaxes the goods from stalwarts such as Stuart Duncan (who improves everything he touches), Jerry Douglas, Tim Stafford, and Adam Steffey while proving that he's right at home in such fast company. Mills's own banjo style is steeped in tradition, often featuring distinctive bends and slurs that add considerable character to the sound. Standout instrumentals such as J.D. Crowe's "Bear Tracks," Don Stover's "Rockwood Deer Chase," and Ralph Stanley's "Big Tilda" lead this train down the line. --Marc Greilsamer

5.0 out of 5 stars Oustanding March 29, 2003
Format:Audio CD
This is an outstanding bluegrass CD. Jim Mills, being an award winning banjo player would be expected to release a hard driving banjo oriented CD and he did. From the opening track, Bound To Ride, you can tell this will be something special. From track to track this CD has no weak points.
With help from many of today's top artists including Ricky Skaggs, Jerry Douglas, Adam Steffey, Barry Bales, Tim Stafford and Stuart Duncan a top notch case has been assembled to surround Jim Mills' great banjo picking. Jim covers songs from some banjo greats including Ralph Stanley and J.D. Crow as well as picking on new songs. "He Came From Carolina" is a song penned as a tribute to the great Earl Scruggs and his playing and is an outstanding example of Jim Mills' banjo playing.
If you like banjo or bluegrass you will enjoy this CD. I highly recommend it for anyone's collection and listening enjoyment.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is rockin' Banjo November 28, 1999
Format:Audio CD
Jim Mills is the IBMA Banjo Player of the Year....and this CD shows why. He cranks...but without too much obvious effort. The banjo sounds like it belongs in the music. Great tone and timing...and great songs too.
This one can't be beat.

5.0 out of 5 stars This album reaffirms the rhythmic power of Bluegrass Banjo September 23, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This album is an inspiration. Jim Mills is a driving, rhythmic banjo player who puts the same level of excitement into his playing that Earl Scruggs did in his younger years. He is innovative within the scope of his tradition, which is quite a feat. Many younger players are always stretching melodic boundaries while ignoring the syncopations and powerful phrases that made the three-finger banjo style so influential in the first place. Jim Mills dwells unapologetically in the heart of the music. This album is one of the freshest to come along in a while because it lets the music speak for itself. As a result, listening to it is a rare treat.
