Book Description

June 1, 1999
It's funny how things turn out. A chance encounter with a Welshman on the Trans Siberian Express en route to Ulaan Bator had made me decide once again to take the long, and difficult, way home. I planned to sail down the coast of China to Shanghai, ride river-boats as far south as I could go on the Yangtze, make my way over the mountains to the border, and, with luck, be allowed to enter Vietnam's far north.

5.0 out of 5 stars natural writer, January 2, 2012
This review is from: Bound for Vietnam (Paperback)
I have read a few of Lydia Laube's books. What I most admire about her writing is that unlike many travel writers she doesn't try to be funny. She just tells the story and lets the incidents do the entertaining. There is nothing forced about her stories. As a result in a few pages you are hooked and you feel you are traveling with her. Anyone interested in starting a career as a travel writer could do a lot worse than read all her books to learn the trade. She is one of the best travel writers out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars East meets West, December 5, 2009
This review is from: Bound for Vietnam (Paperback)
I really enjoyed reading this book. It reminded me of those Michael Palin travel books but the author of this book wears a skirt! Her travels to China and Vietnam were full of happenings and joyful events. Her opinons were funny at times and I think she understands that her Aussie culture is very different from those of the Eastern Asian. I want to read her Tuk tuk book next. So a nice reading, this one...
