Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Noting that a boundary is a structure that determines what will exist and what will not, Cloud, a consultant and author, shows how leaders set the boundaries that will determine whether their vision and people thrive or fail. Leaders determine what will exist and not exist. The author presents seven leadership boundaries that make everything else work and . . . they set the stage, tone and climate for people’s brains to perform. These boundaries are helping people attend to what is important; building the emotional climate that fuels performance; facilitating connections that boost peoples’ functioning; developing thinking patterns that drive results; focusing on what behaviors shape results; building high-performance teams that achieve desired results; and, for leaders, directing themselves in a manner that creates great performance in others. Cloud concludes with his advice to leaders: Take charge. . . . Create an environment and culture where people can be their best. Though clearly an infomercial for the author’s consulting activities, the book offers valuable perspective and ideas. --Mary Whaley

If you are going to read one book on leadership this decade, let it be this one!

In this book, Dr. Henry Cloud does a powerful job showing us that no matter how great is our vision or strategy, no matter how skillful we are in closing multimillion dollar accounts, if we do not know how to get the job done with and through people, we will never reach our highest potential. And if the people that are blocking the vision through negative thought processes or political gaming are allowed to stay, no matter how great our skills, our leadership will not deliver results we want because ultimately the culture of the company must have clear boundaries that support high performance results with calculated risks to not rely on past performance to continue to grow in the future!

Dr. Cloud reveals from his personal experience with many multibillion dollar companies, that the key to successful leadership includes:
1. Culture- Focus on building a culture that encourages high performance rather than keep hopping from one plan to another, from one consultant to another, and hope to come up with the perfect system, we must build a person-centric organization where people can connect with one another across various divisions of a company with specific boundaries defined for success!
2. Focus- Reason why Steve Jobs succeeded in the same company where others had failed, had to also do with how he got the company to FOCUS on specific customer-centric solutions that were easy to understand and manage across a large organization like Apple.
3.

Dr. Cloud is a wise and humorous source of information on all sorts of topics that are essential to leadership, character, and living more fulfilling lives. Boundaries for Leaders is particularly good, because it is rooted in his extensive experience as a clinical psychologist, as well as his own experience as a business man. Anyone looking to improve their work environment, get better results from their team, and stay sane as a leader needs to buy a copy - and send one to their boss, managers, pastors, and community leaders.

What distinguishes this book from all the rest are the principles he expands on that are rooted in neuroscience. My favorite part of the book is his explanation of how the brain works, and why some leadership styles trigger certain brain patterns that make them more effective than others. I also love the reminder that we are RIDICULOUSLY in charge, as leaders. We, as leaders, set the tone on the culture in our workplace, church, family, and community. Ultimately, we make decisions that affect us and the well-being of those under our leadership. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to become the best leader they can be - read it, absorb it, and live it! Dr. Cloud's advice is the best!!

With Boundaries for Leaders: Results, Relationships, and Being Ridiculously in Charge by Dr. Henry Cloud, you're just 7 boundaries away from achieving great results in your teams and organizations. In a clear and concise way, Dr. Cloud outlines why having a strategy isn't enough to get results. You also have to lead in a way that allows your people to function highly. One of my favorite phrases in the book is: "the people are the plan."

Dr. Cloud shows you how to get results by: Creating executable attention; Creating an emotional climate that drives brain functioning; Creating unity that empowers energy and momentum; Creating organizational thought patterns that limit negativity and helplessness; Creating paths for people to take control of the things which drive results; Creating high performance teams that are organized around the behaviors which drive results; and Creating structures that lead to strong self-leadership.

Anyone who considers themselves a leader should read this book. Whether you're a business leader, a pastor, a teacher, or a parent, the principles still apply!

Are you looking for a leadership treatise that is Biblically based and Christ centered? If so, this book is not the one for you. I am not sure why this work is considered a "Christian book" (other than the author's profession to be a Christian); yet, I do believe this leadership manuscript is one that is worthy of your time, effort, and money.

Boundaries for Leaders by Dr. Henry Cloud can be misconstrued as just another leadership book and that is the beauty of Cloud's work - it is not just another leadership book. I do not like to use the word "revolutionary" for books because those are lofty and often meaningless words to curry favor with potential readers (or an author). In this case, however, I will say that Dr. Cloud's work has "revolutionized" my thinking as an educational leader.

I can say such a thing because of the timeliness of receiving this book. We are in the midst of a significant, external situation involving politics. In maintaining a transparent operation, I have shared what is taking place with my constituents and we have all share in each other's misery. The problem has been that those times to "get it off the chest" have turned into prolonged periods of paralysis. Cloud has what he calls a "control divide exercise" and that was significantly beneficial for us. He also has other tools that can be used (calendar audit) to truly help focus a leader on what matters most.

The thesis of Boundaries for Leaders can be summarized in this way: boundaries are essential for success and they are defined as what you create and/or what you allow. Leaders miss the true intent of leadership - not the bottom line or attaining certain goals but people.
