2.0 out of 5 stars Eh
I am a fan of several of the books in the Black Lace series, since I value well-written erotica (i.e. by authors who have spell-checkers, write about sexual people instead of nameless bodies, have more than ten words to refer to the act of intercourse, etc.), regardless if it is, as these propose, "by women, for women". Just turn me on, mind and body, k?

I have read several Black Lace books, but I never read one that I finished and couldn't put down, like this one. I highly reccommend this book if you like "light" eroticism as well as deep romance. It had a great story line and character development with two gorgeous "hunks" in love with the same beautiful woman. The threesome worked. These two men loved her, although both were different as "night and day." This book isn't just about sex, but the deep binding, growth of a loving relationship built on emotions not sex. I also reccommend "The Captivation" by Natasha Rostova and "A Private View" by Crystalle Valentino.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful!, February 4, 2000
This review is from: Out of Bounds (Black Lace) (Paperback)
I have been getting into Black Lace novels for awhile now and from about the 20-25 I have read this book has got to be apart of my top 5 list. It has the right mix of romance, sex, and eroticism. I loved it and I am about to read it again - even though I just finished it today.

to this very well written and masterfully crafted erotic fiction ..

Although the black lace series of books prides itself as being ' erotic fiction written by women for women' this book surpasses that goal in numerous respects. It's erotic writing at it's best, hands down !

From the beginning even the title of this book 'out of bounds ' is so appro pos and meaningfull one can't help but thinking of the author just sitting back and chuckling as she leads us down into a garden of delights to taste that forbidden fruit....

The plot sizzles, character development is complete concise and totally identifiable, and the location of a hidden cottage in the remote hills of France is just plain perfect.

Twenty seven year old Katie, after breaking up with Robert, her unfaithfull boyfriend, and travels from England to France to take posession of her grandfathers remote farm that had been unused for some time. She arrives only to find the house occupied by two squatters, Miguel and Eric, who have been living there for some time as a very happy and frisky couple.

It only takes a second for Eric to hate Katie and see her as a threat to the staus quo of things while Miguel is an immediate enigma to Katie that she finds irresistible...Katie having nowhere to run or call for help is forced to stay and the plot thickens ...

The book slowly takes us step by step down a wonderfull path to Katie working to take Miguel at least away from the 'dark side' when a goup of wandering gypsies and Miguels' sister appear on the scene. The mood changes from electric to nuclear as Miguels sister explores a side of Katie and takes her judgemental attitude of the boys down a notch or two. When the reader thinks that this is about as hot as it can get Katie's ex shows up and she finds herself being taken to the dark side of passion .. etc .. etc ..

The stereotypical concepts that we have about eroticism and sexuality are are twisted turned and exposed by the author in such a skilled fashion that we follow the story as if the reader was there as a player in a five part play.If it's every man's voyeuristic dream to see two women getting it on then this book takes that dream and and develops a womans dream and awakening ......

This is probably one of the best modern erotic book ever written, and i've read a lot of them, and it's a MUST HAVE for your erotic library! Well done Mandy Dickinson well done !

5.0 out of 5 stars well-written erotica, June 19, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Out of Bounds (Black Lace) (Paperback)
One problem I've had with several of the Black Lace books, and erotica in general, is that they tend to use language that's just too weird to be erotic. This book, however, not only avoids that problem, and includes some of the most erotic scenes I've read anywhere, but also is enjoyable in what I saw one reviewer refer to as the "in-between" scenes. I'd write to the author, as she requests, but I don't see an e-mail address listed. Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to seeing more of her books in print.

5.0 out of 5 stars VERY EROTIC BOOK, May 25, 2001
This review is from: Out of Bounds (Black Lace) (Paperback)
I read this bok about a month ago and I still can't get it off my mind. It's a wonderful story of seduction, fantasy and sex.

The story involves Katie, a pretty blond slim girl who wants to get away and she moves into her dead grandfathers house. Little does she know that there are already two men living there. One of the men(miguel) is tall, dark and extremely handsome, the other(eric) is very gorgeous, blond and heas green eyes.

Katie becomes involved with both handsome men(wow!)and as she tells her story, you can't help but become aroused, excited and join in on her sexual fantasies. To add to the the sexual tension, Katie's x-boyfriend arrives and also gets involved in this already crazed sexual affair.

This is a great erotica book, I enjoyed reading it.

5.0 out of 5 stars the best of black lace, March 5, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Out of Bounds (Black Lace) (Paperback)
I have enjoyed the book enormously. It has a very casual, conversation-like writing style to it, and it is mostly about day-to-day activities like cleaning house, going shopping, having lunch, going surfing etc, but somehow it has managed to be charming, captivating and even humorous at times. The story is interesting, and charactors are unique but realistic and very well developed. I could not put it down, and I started re-reading it as soon as I finished it the first time.

The level of erotism is just about right, nothing too perverted. And I love reading beautiful young people doing it. However, some sex scenes perhaps can be spiced up a little.

But all in all, it is an extremely satisfying read with a heavy dose of romance and love. More please Mandy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Put this one on the keeper shelf!, August 16, 2000

This review is from: Out of Bounds (Black Lace) (Paperback)
What an amazing unconventional romance! I know this book is categorized as erotica, but it is a love story, plain and simple. If you're too bored with traditional romances, give this one a try. The love scenes (and I do mean LOVE scenes) are wonderful, but I will reread this book for the storyline. I found myself falling in love with all three characters and was disappointed to see the book end. Ms. Dickinson has gone beyond erotica and touched the heart.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good, just one little thing...., December 31, 2000

This review is from: Out of Bounds (Black Lace) (Paperback)
I enjoyed the story, the characters were good, the good slow build-up to the fun stuff, an excellent variety of situations, and the hot scenes themselves!

I just have one suggestion for the author... every single time the moment of supreme delight is reached, does she have to say "I came in great long shudders"??? I may be mistaken, but I think there are one or two other ways to depict that.

Seldom do I read a book more than once, but this one will be worn out before long! The premise is sexy, the interaction between the characters is captivating! I hope to see more of Ms. Dickinson's works available soon!

2.0 out of 5 stars Eh, September 21, 2006
This review is from: Out of Bounds (Black Lace) (Paperback)
I am a fan of several of the books in the Black Lace series, since I value well-written erotica (i.e. by authors who have spell-checkers, write about sexual people instead of nameless bodies, have more than ten words to refer to the act of intercourse, etc.), regardless if it is, as these propose, "by women, for women". Just turn me on, mind and body, k?

I wanted to like this book; I seriously did. The subject matter itself is enough to get me going: a woman who stumbles onto two men in an apparent relationship and they all start to explore the erotic possibilities amongst them? As a chick who finds m/m material hotter than hot, and bisexual threesomes even hotter, it should have been right up my alley. And hearing that there would be an intriguing storyline full of mystery and romance only helped to get me excited for this purchase.

But right from the get-go it rubbed me the wrong way. Probably worst of all is that Kate is so incredibly naive even to the point of stupidity, about sexual matters. For far too long she operates on the belief that Miguel and Eric are gay and "out of bounds" (hence the title) because she saw them sleeping in one another's arms, even after they both come onto her and make it impossible to doubt their interest. That ticked me off immensely. Even if we forget that, Kate is a clone of every other woman I read about described in erotica that makes a big deal of being written by women: "I want crazy sex, but it feels so naughty and dirty! Oh this is so wrong but mmm so good! I want to be dominated without giving up my independence and womanliness!". I think Mandy Dickinson does a good job of fleshing out Kate, getting into a women's mind, etc., etc., but God if I don't hate the kind of character that she is.

In that same vein are the other characters, Miguel, Eric, and Robert (her ex who comes back in). Robert is the most sympathetic character, and, correspondingly, leaves just as things start to perk up. Like almost everything that features two men and a woman (be it threesome or simply love triangle), the two men are archetypes so that the woman can get (or has to choose between) everything that's out there. So Miguel is Spanish and dark, moody, tempermental, artistic, tra-la-la; Eric is Viking blonde, surfer-cool, dominating but with a tender side. Readers, of course, can pick their favorite, but I'd rather choose neither. Miguel is perfectly romantic and charming and slightly dangerous and all that, which at first did reel me in. But once he "fell in love" with Kate and everything was gooey, goppy sweet between them, I found him extremely dislikable. Again, Eric fell somewhat into the same category for me: very interesting in the beginning, even more interesting as things deepened, and then just yuck. His sexual orientation just runs all over the place to lead readers down the wrong paths but melts under the freakish power of Kate. Both Miguel and Eric's actions make little sense when you examine them. I'm all for intruige and emotionally-laden behavior (let's face it, it makes sex a lot more fun to read than just 'they got into bed because they were horny'), but the boys flip-flop insanely, are hard to understand, and in the end, all their wishy-washy weirdness never really changed anything, plot-wise.

The plot was just too thin. People have said it was amazing, but it really wasn't. I was never overly motivated to figure out what was going on, because it wasn't ever given utmost importance, and Dickinson dragged it out soooo long. I could see everything coming from a mile away; Eric looks just like Kate and is living in her house, so they share a connection, Robert had cheated and comes with them to notice Eric's uncanny resemblance- duh, he was cheating with guys, is gay, and they get together. The one thing I never saw coming- that Miguel had been waiting for Kate all his life- was so lame and ridiculous that it ruined things for me completely. I just hated it.

In terms of the part that matters the most- the sexual/erotic stuff- it's just not there, not in all its sizzling glory the way it should be. In the beginning, there is a definite lack of sex. I understand that its necessary to develop something before everyone jumps into bed, but usually other authors throw in memories, fantasies, etc. to get things going until the actual characters start going at it. When it does start to happen, it's so short and undeveloped that it just falls flat. Honestly- almost every sex scene consists of 1) Kate somehow glancing one of the boy's out-and-about erections and getting "dripping wet", 2) the boys rubbing her until she can't stand it, 3) some penetration she's been begging for, and 4) a final shuddering orgasm. An entire sex scene might take three paragraphs, maybe up to six if something extra is added on, but it rarely is. It's boring and repetitive. The only time we get a little extra zing is in the nice occasions that have everyone involved or the kinky stuff, which really isn't that kinky. Moreover, for anyone who got this book for the m/m stuff, it just hardly isn't there. The boys weren't really bisexual in the way I hoped. The sex is there, but not in the strong way it could be.

Overall, this didn't do it for me. I was bored, I was skeptical, I was dry as a bone 'down there', and in the end, I tossed it. If you want real m/m/f erotica, try reading Emma Holly's 'Strange Attractions' (many cite her 'Menage', but I found it somewhat like this book). That's just my opinion, though . . .

- boys not even really bisexual
