This is my first metal detector. I don't know that I'll make a hobby out of it. I mostly wanted to locate pipes in the back yard.Having said that, it seems to be a decent unit. Of course, I haven't tried a super duper detector, so I don't know what I'm missing. But, for example, I've found a dime down at 4 inches, at the transition between the driveway and grass. No need for ground balance and such. It's automatic. I'm learning the tones and, while I can't tell you what I'm going to find given a certain tone, it does disc out iron, killing off a lot of trash. I'm now at the point that when it says something is there with disc set, it's now more interesting to dig. One thing that doesn't seem very accurate is the pin pointing. Or maybe I don't know what I'm doing. But I can get a definite signal at a definite spot, do the same orthogonally, lower the sens to define the spot better, dig the spot, only to find the signal has "moved" a few inches away. I eventually find what's there, but it's not always where it says it is. Makes for bigger holes. (Desert "soil" in Phoenix, AZ.) I went to a park for fun. If you want to coin shoot, it does fine, especially considering coins from a party the night before will be on the surface. You don't need a $500 unit for that. For a first time unit, I can't complain, especially considering the price. I read that Fisher is selling its F2 with two coils for $200 for December which sounds like a smoking deal. If you think you're going to make a hobby out of m.d., maybe it would be better to spend the money toward that. Otherwise, for an occasional unit, this is fine.

Found Something More Precious Than Gold,

I always had an interest in buying a metal detector but like so many other things, the idea got back burnered. Then a couple of weeks ago I was gardening in my backyard when I looked down at my hands and to my dismay discovered that my wedding ring was missing. Now I had been digging for the better part of an hour and had no idea at what point in time it had fallen off. My frantic efforts to find it were to no avail. I sat slumped for a moment and then it hit me - now more than ever is a great time to buy that metal detector you always wanted. I immediately went on-line, read a few reviews, and decided on the Bounty Hunter VLF. It arrived a week later and I couldn't wait to try it out. Assembly was very easy and it was no time before I was outside. It literally wasn't a minute before the machine beeped. I dropped to my knees, dug, and found my ring! Need I say more. The machine is the best!!!

not good for buried small objects,

Will not pick up a coin or ring if it is buried more than 1/4" in the ground - it will pick up a soda can that is 6" deep. Not a good choice if you are looking for a lost ring, unless you are sure the ring is not buried at all. This would make a good toy for the kids.

The device has no English manual, luckily I can read French. It has no real sensitivity setting other than ON and OFF.It cannot detect objects unless they are right above the ground. It can't even detect a penny under a book! Waste of money, plan to return it.

My son really liked this item. Only problem is that you had to be right on top of an object for it to buzz so he soon got sick of playing with it.

When I looked at the picture of the metal detector there was a earphone jack, on mine there was not. Other than that a good metal detector.

We bought this metal detector for my 87 year-old grandfather. We needed something lightweight and simple to use, but that was still a good quality instrument. It works great and he absolutely loves it.

This review is from: Bounty Hunter VLF Metal Detector (Lawn & Patio)
I BOUGHT THIS METAL DETECTOR FOR MY HUSBAND... HE AND OUR FAMILY HAVE HAD FUN AND SUCCESS FINDING ALL SORTS OF THINGS WITH IT ON OUR FAMILY RANCH. IT WAS ONE OF THE LESS EXPENSIVE DETECTORS SO I WAS WORRIED ON HOW WELL IT WOULD BE ~ BUT I HAVE BEEN VERY HAPPY WITH IT. IT IS A GOOD VALUE.
