Born in 1948, Namkhainyambuu became an "individualist" hero in his own country. He experienced collectivization, the period of "high socialism," followed by the demise of the collectives (negdels) in 1991-1992. This book provides a unique insight in Mongolian pastoral life over the past half century of change and turmoil, providing greater understanding of many Mongolian issues including kinship ties, the rigors of a herding life, the relationship between the Mongol shepherd and the Communist Party, as well as the particular skills of a successful herder.
