This young band mixes gypsy jazz with swing and they are wonderful!
There were over 60 performing musicians or groups at this week's Philadelphia Folk Festival, including major names like Tom Rush and The Decemberists, but one of the few that really took my breath away was this quintet from Bridgeport, CT. From the first time they took the stage and led off with "Ghostwriter" - which is the lead track on their CD, I was hooked. The husband and wife team of Fuzz and Carrie front the band playing guitars alternating between both the swing and gypsy jazz styles. (The music on this, their freshman album, leans more toward swing - which is just fine with me!) They also co-wrote all but one of the album's dozen tracks. Violinist Ben Dean's bow does some amazing things with notes and string bass player Brian Anderson (who composed "Dr. Flynn", which closes the album, keeps things going. Add the accordion of Bruce Martin and you've got one heck of a talented band. The album is supposedly divided into three "Acts", but I couldn't tell that from the songs. And, too be honest, the only (and I mean ONLY) weakness in this CD is that the lyrics are printed in an odd type style, in a miniscule font, in tan on a brown background! They are impossible to read. But that shouldn't stop you from getting this disc. It's the music that counts, and that music is a lot of fun. On the CD they can't quite stretch out solos like they do in live performance, but try to sit still when this disc is on. Catch them live if you can, but until then check out the audio samples and then get the whole CD. Steve Ramm "Anything Phonographic"
