Woods 1987 quintet preserved and expanded the bop tradition harmonically and compositionally, successfully embracing unlikely source material as the "Star Trek" theme as an uptempo blowout. Five lengthy workouts feature Woods' alto and occasional clarinet, along with trumpeter Tom Harrell, pianist Hal Galper, bassist Steve Gilmore and drummer Bill Goodwin. Galper solos outstandingly on his own composition, the Latin-based "Tune of the Unknown Samba".
