Editorial Reviews

Review

Just like a fine dram, drinkers will savor Bernie Lubbers' Bourbon Whiskey. It's a personal and very enjoyable guide to America's native spirit. --Noah Rothbaum, Editor in Chief of Liquor.com and author of The Business of Spirits

What can I say, finally a book for the bourbon lover written by someone with the inside line. Bernie pulls no punches here but he is also the consummate entertainer and educator. I am actually amazed, given the amount of travel he does for his ambassadorial role, that Bernie has found the time to write a book. But I am glad he has. His liquid lessons have kept audiences thrilled across the USA and now those of us that cannot make his tastings can have his wisdom on our shelves. This is not just something to dip into, this is a book to delve into, soak up and appreciate. --Rob Allanson, Editor, Whiskey magazine

As the world takes more interest in whiskey generally, the world of bourbon has been crying out for a modern accessible book to tell its story. Bernie Lubbers has provided it. Its not just a solid account of what bourbon is, it is a work of passion, Lubbers love for Kentucky and its whisky flowing freely from every page. --Dominic Roskrow, international whiskey writer

After reading the previous reviews, I thought this would be a worthwhile book to buy and learn more about whiskey, but it just wasn't good. The author seemed more interested in making funny (not funny, btw) remarks about experiences that kind of have something to do with whiskey. It struck me as very amateurish. If you want to learn the ins and outs of whiskey, go with "Bourbon, Straight" by Charles Cowdery instead. That book has significantly more substance than this one written by Bernie Lubbers. Needless to say, I didn't care for "Bourbon Whiskey: Our Native Spirit" at all. There were also glitches with the Kindle version, where large chunks of text would be cut off in certain sections.

For the unaware like myself prior to the purchase (I rushed in due to the positive reviews) Bernie Lubbers, the self proclaimed "whiskey professor" is basically a sales rep for Jim Beam Co. So expect a lot of bias/praise towards the Jim Beam family of whiskey, not neccesarily a bad thing depending on your whiskey palate but please be aware of this, and do take the time to google Bernie before you commit to buying, check out his writing style, it might save you a disappointing purchase.

I didn't enjoy his "humor" and his slightly self indulgent two chapter (23 page) personal history introduction to the book had me wondering "who the he'll does this guy think he is", if he wasnt directly employed by JB I might have given him slightly more slack, however I found it really hard to get beyond this point.

All the info is there in this book, the history of bourbon and a good explanation of the distillation process and great tips on whiskey tasting, this guy definitely knows his stuff, there is no doubt, however if you already own Chuck Cowderys bourbon uncut, you won't find anything new or exciting here.

Bernie is too funny. I have seen him at industry events numerous times and I always learn something new. This book puts it all in place while at the same time it is full of great humor. I was reading it on my flight the other day and actually laughed out loud so many times that the person next to me had to ask me "What are you reading..."
Bernie has put together the most informative book on bourbon and did it in a way that made you not want to put the book down. It is a great reference tool as well. The charts of history are great and the label reading tool will help me make better choices at my local liquor store. The best part was the fact that he included his famous "Urban Bourbon Trail" with all the great local hangouts in Louisville.
Just a great book I will read many times.... I will be the most informed bourbon drinker at my next cocktail party.
Cheers!

Bernie has penned the most entertaining and informative book in the industry. If you like bourbon it's a must read. If you have yet to experience the wonderful world of bourbon you will enjoy Bernie's entertaining style and storytelling. Mix a little US history, with equal parts comedy and equal parts information and you have the perfect cocktail of a book. The only improvement would be is that it should come with a glass of Knob Creek...

The book is OK but there are many others that have more substance. This book is more of a summary of bourbon with personal observations of things marginally related to the distilling industry. He lost me with the picture of VP Biden and his foolish political statements.

I loved the book, found it to be educational as well as entertaining. The itinerary for the Bourbon Trail and the UrbanBourbon Trail as well as section on having your own Home Bourbon Tasting is functional and fabulous. Terrific insight into the world of bourbon, I will be sure to buy the book for my friends with a big bottle of bourbon! Perfect holiday gift!
Great work Mr. Lubbers!

Living in Kentucky and being a beginning bourbon drinker I felt this book was a must read. Whether you are looking to learn the inner workings of selecting/reading a bottle of bourbon, handy tips for ordering at a bar, or simply a great read on history and the industry I would say to pick up a copy. I love his style of writing!

Agreed, it should come with a glass of bourbon.. ;)

I actually had the pleasure of meeting Bernie Lubbers and I can tell you he is extremely passionate about bourbon. Like so many Kentuckians bourbon runs through his veins, he bleeds for this industry (figuratively of course), but that passion resonates throughout this book. Like so many other books on bourbon he gives an excellent history of the industry, but he also works for the Jim Beam Distillery as a Whiskey Professor so he is able to offer some interesting perspectives and insights because he's there every day. His book also gives a timeline of important bourbon dates which helps centralize the sometimes confusing information in bourbon's history. The book also gives useful information on how to read a bourbon label, how to host a bourbon tasting, his favorite recipes, and a brief biography on himself and how he became a Whiskey Professor. Between our meeting and the book, Mr. Lubbers was able to provide me with a lot of useful information, I would not have been privy to without his help.
