Editorial Reviews

About the Artist
Offwhyte's super-evolved, next-level lyricism has inspired minds from all walks of life, and his dynamic stage performance has captivated audiences the world over. A songwriter and producer with styles of all kinds, he has released two albums under the critically-acclaimed Galapagos4 label, of which he is a founding member. For the past two years Offwhyte has been touring consistently, building a legion of fans to share in his cause. In his travels he has shared stage billing with names such as Chuck D, Pete Rock, and J-Live.

A Filipino-American born in Pell City, Alabama, Offwhyte derived his stage name from his incorrect birth certificate, which was marked "white". In Alabama in the 1970's there were only two classifications of race on a birth certificate: white and black. Offwhyte has not yet sought to get this formality corrected.

He came to Chicago and attended the University of Illinois with his long-time friend Jeff Kuglich. There they met a graffiti writer and painter named Josh Grotto aka JASH of Chicago’s legendary DC5 and TMP crews. The three developed a friendship that would become the foundation of Galapagos4. Offwhyte started performing for crowds spitting raps at hip hop parties and open mic poetry nights around the city.

His debut album "Squints" was the imprint's first full-length release in February 2000, and was hailed as a classic by true hip hop fans across the globe. Urb Magazine called it "ingenious" and the Village Voice described it as "free-floating intelligence". Heads from all around took quick notice to Offwheezy’s lyrical dexterity and untamed production skills.

His second album, The Fifth Sun, was released in November 2002. Licensed by Agenda, a division of the well-known British electronica label Peacefrog, it has since become a worldwide commodity. Since its release Offwhyte has been on three European tours and his European fan base is constantly expanding. A songwriter, producer, poet and most definitely a performer, Offwhyte wields his talent with an edge of angst, crafting today’s underground hip hop in the spirit of Boogie Down Productions and Public Enemy. The urgency of his music and the passion by which he delivers his messages may cause many to call him a modern day revolutionary,

This fall, Offwhyte delivers his most important release yet, the Bow to the Sceptor EP. What started out as a song of protest against the war is fast becoming the most well-received song of Offwhyte’s career. Featuring production by Meaty Ogre, Offwhyte, and G4 newcomers Kip Killigain and Mike Gao, the 7-track classic drops everywhere December 2004 on Galapagos4. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Product Description
Songs of revolution have always been born in tumultuous times. In this era of an ongoing war, highly polarized politics, and an overall sense of general uncertainty, emotions run high in the veins of the average American citizen.

Enter "Bow to the Sceptor", the title track of Offwhyte’s latest offering. A song that is part spoken word and part double-time lyrical frenzy, the raw angst of the frustrated masses is voiced heavily in this landmark work, as "blatant protests go unannounced, someone’s got checks to bounce and disgust has reached a new level of subtlety, redundantly!" Laced with dark production reminiscent of a 23rd Century snake charmer, "Bow to the Sceptor" is meant to capture the feeling of urgency, anxiousness and need for change that many of us Americans feel today.

Offwhyte has been getting more and more prolific as a songwriter ever since the worldwide success of his 2002 album, The Fifth Sun. The seven-song EP springs to life with "Kept", pairing Offwhyte with G4 veteran Meaty Ogre for an intentionally overdramatic track, where Offwhyte spits pieces of lush imagery depicting a perfect home environment. On "Kid is Raw", Offwhyte makes a proclamation of dues paid, declaring himself and his crew an undisputed pillar in the Chicago hip hop community. "On Purpose" is an essay on true b-boyism, self-produced by Offwhyte.

In an effort to represent his highly talented and close-knit crew, the EP also features a track by Galapagos4 artist Mestizo - "Rival Ritual" produced by DJ White Lightning. This track is a declaration, meant to convey Galapagos4’s dominance within the underground community, in which Mestizo also references the "Sceptor".

The production on the EP brings forth some of the newer talent on Galapagos4. "Bow to the Sceptor" is produced by Kip Killagain and Morphus of Arizona jungle/dnb crew Ruff Sumptn’, and "Kid is Raw" is produced by up and coming LA beatsmith Mike Gao. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.
