Bowl Turning Techniques Masterclass [Paperback]

Tony Boase (Author)

Available from these sellers.

Book Description

June 2000
A survey in words and photographs of the fine art of making wooden bowls on the lathe, featuring the work of ten of the best makers at work today. These are Robin Wood, Stuart Batty, John Ambrose, Merete Larsen, Liam Flynn, Ciaran Forbes, David Comerford, Stuart Mortimer, Louise Hibbert, and the author himself. Each of the ten project chapters takes us through the stages in making a particular type of bowl, ranging from simple domestic bowls made on the ancient pole lathe to highly innovative studio pieces. Colour photographs and detailed captions allow the reader to follow the whole process, and to appreciate the rewards and challenges involved.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

It is only by personal trial that many of us can appreciate the toils, troubles, and labors of the artisan. Yet author and practitioner Boase almost instantly transforms our perceptions of the not-so-ordinary art bowl, primarily through striking color photographs of 10 artists at work. Of course, the piece de resistance is prefaced by good-to-have information, such as a brief history (the first fragment was attributed to 1500 B.C. England) and data about wood. Some of the helpful hints are peculiarly English in bent; recommended places for finding wood, for instance, are cricket-bat manufacturers and Council rubbish dumps. No question, though, the art supersedes all idiosyncrasies; as just one example, it's hard not to gasp when viewing Louise Hibbert's radiolarian bowl executed in sycamore. Barbara Jacobs
