4.0 out of 5 stars Get It, May 17, 2002

Like so many others, I hunted down this CD after hearing the Kossoy's version of "I'll Fly Away" in OH BROTHER WHERE ART THOU and finding a different version on the soundtrack. It was worth the time it took to track it down.

The whole CD has that early-morning haunt sound of "I'll Fly Away." "Bowling Green" is great, as are "Poor Ellen Smith," "What Will We Do With The Baby O," "The Darby Ram" and, of course, the heartstopping "I'll Fly Away."

This isn't quite bluegrass; it's mountain music with one foot in pre-civil war English/Irish immigrant tunes. Great stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars a nice find, November 24, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Bowling Green (Audio CD)
The Kossoy Sisters w Erik Darling blend aching harmonies with plucky, lively banjo to create a very earthy and satisfying listening experience. Of note is the version of "I'll Fly Away" (the version featured in the ACTUAL MOVIE O Brother Where Art Thou, but NOT in the soundtrack). Highly recommended. They don't make music like this anymore...

5.0 out of 5 stars Correct an injustice and buy this album, April 30, 2002

The Kossoy Sisters version of "I'll Fly Away" as heard in the movie "O Brother Where Art Thou" is far superior to the Gillian Welch version heard on the album.

Why the Kossoys weren't included on the multi-million seller soundtrack, unlike every other artist featured in the film, is still a mystery. But whatever the reason, it wasn't fair, so get this album if you loved that song and want to support these artists.

5.0 out of 5 stars this album is back in print in a box set elsewhere on amazon, November 25, 2005

this album is out of print by itself, but the good news is that it is now available as part of a low cost 3 CD box set, which is an even better value, because you get this album plus 2 more old great Tradition label bluegrass CD's all together for 19.98, search amazon music for 'Best of The Bluegrass Tradition' - how cool is that?

4.0 out of 5 stars For those disappointed with O Brother Where art Thou:, June 1, 2005

This is a sweet and uplifting album, despite some of its dark subject matter. The third track, "I'll Fly Away" was in the Coen's classic film "O Brother Where Art Thou." For inexplicable reasons, the Kossoy Sisters' version was not included on the OBWAT soundtrack. This is the only album that has it. The musicianship is excellent, featuring both guitar and banjo. The sisters have an angelic vocal presence. It is a refreshing change from the the fashionable shallowness found in so many contemporary albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars sense memories of the Kossoy sisters, September 11, 2006
This review is from: Bowling Green (Audio CD)
My parents used to play this album (along with Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison & San Quentin Prison; Pete Seeger, We Shall Overcome; and the first four Simon & Garfunkel LPs) at their parties in the late 60s and very early 70s. My brothers and I used to go to sleep at night listening to these tunes. These wonderful harmonies and bloody stories are etched in my brain forever, I'm happy to say. I'm so glad to find them in CD, and also in this boxed set. Thanks so much for letting us know!

5.0 out of 5 stars The magical Kossoy sisters, January 16, 2008

After receiving my CD of "Bowling Green" from England by way of Switzerland, I played it a few times, not more than fifty. The ethereal blending of voices by Ellen and Irene plus the rollicking banjo work of Erik Darling are among the best auditory experiences a human can have. I am also fortunate to have the latest CD by the Kossoys, "Hop on Pretty Girls." If you can find a copy, consider yourself twice blessed. These two ladies are a national treasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars hauting, beautiful, arresting, this is the album for you, January 27, 2006

This is the most freshest sounding music I've heard in a long while. Music that breaks all boundaries is a hard find - but here you have it. A collection of traditional bluegrass and old time mountain songs performed by 2 wonderful girls - Irene and Ellen Kossoy. Recorded in 1956, the songs have stood the test of time because there is something different about them. This is not your basic folk. This is it's own thing. The raw emotion the sisters express moves me like no other, and maybe it will you too.

A great record for anyone serious about music. And there's a new one out too - 'Hop On Pretty Girls' (2002).

Buy this record.

5.0 out of 5 stars Primo old time music, June 16, 2005
This review is from: Bowling Green (Audio CD)
The Kosssoy Sisters as everyone else reviewing got dropped mysteriously from the soundtrack of 'O brother', maybe the upshot is that folks will get their whole album and not be content w/ I'll fly away.

They were one of the the first neo-old time acts around, presumably influenced by Harry Smith's monumental Anthology of American Folk Music. So while they are not Appalaichian folks themselves, this album is surely one of the best interpreations. Their version of 'In the Pines' alone is worth the low sticker price.

Perfect harmonies, great instrumentation.

Thinkin bout gettin it? Do it!

If only I'd read the review mentioning the budget-priced Traditon box set where you get "Bowling Green" plus two other albums, before I shelled out $50 for the single album. Not quite $19 now as listed, but still much more affordable at approx $24 for three recordings.
