5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the best of all the Scorpions compilations, thus far

3.0 out of 5 stars Yet another Scorpions compilation, January 29, 2005
This review is from: Box of Scorpions (Dig) (Audio CD)
If you are a casual Scorpions fan, but want a more comprehensive compilation than the 20th Century Masters - Best of Scorpions album, then Box of Scorpions is one of the best deals available. This album touches on pretty much every Scorpions album, from 1972's Lonesome Crow through 2002's Bad For Good: The Very Best of Scorpions. This shows how Scorpions have evolved over the course of three decades, from the progressive-jazz-rock in the their early days, to the raw German metal of the 70s, the pop rock of the 80s, and their experimentation of the 90s.

Pros:
- Pretty much every album is covered, which no commercially available compilation has done yet. Most compilations have concentrated only on their RCA or Mercury years albums.
- In addition to the well known songs, there are some other not as well known songs like "20th Century Man", or "I'm Goin' Mad".
- The inside packaging features a description/comment about each song, which gives some interesting tidbits about some of the songs (such as "Cause I Love You" was another song written around the Lovedrive era).

Cons:
- For being called "Box of Scorpions", it isn't even in a box! It is more elaborate packaging, which is nice looking, but it's not a true boxed set.
- Pretty much every real boxed set I've seen tends to contain many rarities, such as B-sides, demos, extra live cuts, etc. Nirvana's boxed set contains mostly rare songs. Axel Rudi Pell's compilation album "Wizard's Chosen Few" also contained a decent number of rare and new songs. Box of Scorpions did not contain any new songs that many die-hard Scorpions fans didn't already have. There are a few of the more "rare" or "extra" songs like "Cause I Love You", "I Can't Explain", or "Over the Top" which were only featured on previous compilation albums, but as I mentioned, many of these songs are easily obtainable. What would have made this a better collection would have been songs like "Rock My Car", "Partners In Crime", or "She's Knocking At My Door".
- Missing songs: While this compilation does feature a wide assortment of Scorpions songs, there are a few numbers which were missed. The most notable omission is Uli Roth's classic "The Sails of Charon". Instead of having the studio version of "We'll Burn the Sky" (which is the worst version of this song), they should have included the Tokyo Tapes version (which is the best version I've heard, in addition to being my favorite song). And like many compilations, many great songs will be missed, such as "Now!", "Animal Magnetism", "China White", "Living For Tomorrow", "Ship of Fools", "Crazy World", "Wild Child", "Mind Like A Tree", and list can go on and on. Many of the songs on Box of Scorpions were released as singles, which is part of the reason that they ended up on different compilation albums.
- As another reviewer noted, the pictures inside are from the classic 80's line up. Having some pictures of EARLY Scorpions shows, or perhaps some more recent pictures with Ralph Riekermann and James Kottak would have been nice additions.

So who is Box of Scorpions for? This is a good collection for a person who is interested in learning more about Scorpions, to get a better feel for the band and its 3+ decades of music. Perhaps one new fan will enjoy the Uli Roth era of music, others might prefer the 80s pop metal, or some might like the more refined or experimental edge to the Scorpions in the 90s. But for the serious Scorpions collector, there is nothing extraordinary or amazing about this collection, except for the privilege to own it and add yet another compilation onto the already towering stack of Scorpions albums.

The "Box Of Scorpions" 3-disc set is probably the best of the many Scorpions compilations that have been released to date. Credit must be given to the folks at Universal Music for getting it done right with this set.

Here's what makes this set pretty decent compared to the other Scorpions packages:

1. A fair representation of tracks from the entire era of Scorpions music, including tracks from albums released under the RCA label. (Not to complain, but it would have been nice to see "It All Depends" here).

2. A number of tracks that have not appeared on other sets, such as "Don't Make No Promises", "20th Century Man" and "Mysterious". It's good to see different tracks other that the same ones that appear over and over again.

3. Three discs as opposed to two or one. Let's face it, any compilation of the Scorpions that does not contain at least 3 discs or maybe 4 just doesn't do justice to the band or its fans. The Scorpions have been around too long to have one-disc CDs being released with their hits. These small compilations will not contain all of their best stuff.

If you are new to the Scorpions or a long-time fan, do yourself a favor and pick up this set. It has the best of what the Scorpions are all about and you won't be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars impressed , yet dissapointed, June 19, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Box of Scorpions (Dig) (Audio CD)
When I first heard the scorps releasing this box , I was excited, however this is my plus and minus report,
plus - I was impressed that it covered every
album
they did . And every song they put on , were songs that i've loved.
minus- I was hoping they would put old unreleased tracks.
as well as never before heard live shows from 1973-1977,
or lovedrive shows when micheal schenker played with them during that tour. I also was displeased they only put one song off the "lonesome crow" album.

plus- the booklet comes with a summary of each song ,as well as pictures of each album.

minus- all the photos of the band are of the classic lineup (1979-1991) there are no early photos of members such as , Micheal Schenker , Ulrich Roth , Jurgen Rosthental , Klaus Meine with hair.

All in all this is not really a box set , just a well put together compilation. good to have , but not that exciting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nearly all the songs, but not the best Remaster, July 21, 2004
This review is from: Box of Scorpions (Dig) (Audio CD)
I don't feel the need to praise Scorpions like the other reviewers because you already know the guys. And I don't need to tell about the songs because you already know them. What I really want to talk about is the sound quality of the CD.

I bought Scorpions (Best), this one, and the Remaster series of the albums. I played the same songs on all of them. The quality was not the best. It has all the good versions of the songs. Better quality than the first releases. But not the best.

Even though it does not include the all essentials, On one album, It sounded like they traveled through time and just recorded today with the new technology on the "Scorpions: Best" - There are many of them so I will give the Full Catalog Number: 724349701328 - in Amazon it is only 4970132. I am not saying don't buy the "Box of Scorpions" There are many more songs that I liked on that one on other albums. But Scorpions : Best sounds way better

2.0 out of 5 stars GREAT BAND, AWFUL BOX SET., June 15, 2005
By
ALEX CANTU (Queretaro, MEX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Box of Scorpions (Dig) (Audio CD)
Who needs another "best of" album that covers the entire career from SCORPIONS after:
- Bad For Good. The Very Best Of Scorpions.
- 20th Century Masters
- Deadly Sting. Mercury Years
- The Best Of Rockers'N'Ballads.
- Scoprions: Best (Import)
- Hot & Slow: Best Masters of the 70's.
- Acoustica.

Well, I guess nobody.

Every band is releasing it's own box set and I guess SCORPIONS or the record company didn't want to be without one. But all the other bands included at least ONE song that was "live", "bootleg" or even "unreleased". This compilation is flat, all the songs are very much the same as they are in the original recordings. And nothing is new. NOT EVEN A SONG COVER FROM OTHER BAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On the other hand....................... Where is the box in the "Box Set"? This is not even in a box. I have to say the package is very first class, but it's in a package as the VAN HALEN album "Right Here" came (on their first edition). So is nothing very great.

I won't review SCORPIONS cause they are survivors on the hard rock music. They have been together even before KISS, AC/DC, VAN HALEN maybe even JUDAS PRIEST. They are great, but hey, A BOX SET that doesn't even comes in a box?.

I guess you have my point, spending $36.00 USD for music you already have is pretty stupid. Who is stupid enough to spend it? Well................................I am. That's why I'm telling you to skip this one, unless you are a completist not a collector.

Buy another "Best of" album and save some money. Or better yet, buy the entire collection (Their music deserves it). But stay away of this one, unless you are a die-hard fan.

The inner notes are good although. I'm giving 2 stars: 1 because I'm not reviewing SCORPIONS, I'm reviewing the "so-called" box set and the other one because I have to give at least one star.

Highlight: Is SCORPIONS (can't go wrong with the SCORP'S), the innernotes
Lowlight: BORING......................I was waiting for something more spectacular.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything the casual Scorpions fan will need and more!, April 5, 2008
This review is from: Box of Scorpions (Dig) (Audio CD)
Scorpions have changed the way people look at heavy metal. Led by Klaus Meine and Rudolf Schenker, their music fueled the late-'70s/1980s heavy metal scene.

Hip-O/Mercury's 'Box of Scorpions' collects every aspect of their career. From their 1970s years on RCA, to their 1980s years on Mercury, to their 1990s years on Sanctuary, they are all covered here. And, every single hit from every single era is here. 'In Trance,' 'Rock You Like A Hurricane,' 'No One Like You,' 'Can't Live Without You,' 'Another Piece of Meat' and 'Winds of Change' all appear on this set.

And, I give Hip-O tons of credit for remastering this. The sound quality is simply incredible!

Overall, if you are just a casual fan looking for a complete set without buying the studio records (Their RCA records are getting harder and harder to find), than this set is perfect for you.

Highly recommended for any Scorpions fan. ENJOY!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a fun set of Scorpions music, August 9, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Box of Scorpions (Dig) (Audio CD)
After reading several of the positive and negative reviews of this compilation I have a different way of reviewing this "box set". Some were critical of the fact that it isn't really a "box", some were critical of the song selection, or the mastering (which is important), and some were saying that it is okay for the casual Scorpions fan but not the serious fan because of the lack of extras or B sides. But for an older, serious fan of the Scorpions like me who had most of the albums on vinyl and who doesn't want to deal with that format anymore, this is a great way to get a comprehensive set of Scorpions music on CD without having to replace all the LP's with CD's. I know that having the individual CD's is great because most of the songs that didn't make the top 40 or top 10 are some of the best songs available from any group but for $40 this is a great collection. Just remember to have fun with it and enjoy the music!!

5.0 out of 5 stars ROCKS. plain and simple., April 19, 2006
This review is from: Box of Scorpions (Dig) (Audio CD)
i got this the other day, and lemme tell ya, i was just plain blown away by just about every song on the album. i thought it kinda started out slow on the first disc--about 4 or 5 songs into it--but after that, it just took off and i never looked back. yea, i kno its one of yet another SCORPIONS best of things, but it offers a wider variety that most--if not all--of them. its got some great tracks.

i reccomend it to long time fans and newcomers alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars So the Scorpions probably have more greatest hits albums than they have studio albums, February 24, 2006
This review is from: Box of Scorpions (Dig) (Audio CD)
Okay, so the Scorpions probably have more greatest hits albums than they have studio albums, but this is their first three disc collection. Unlike previous compilations, not only are the big hits included, but also the early material before the Scorps broke in the US. Only the Scorpions would include new songs from previous hits collections. There version of "Rock You Like a Hurricane" with an orchestra is simply awesome. The older stuff might be a bit rough to handle for some.
