Took awhile hunting through page-after-page of flames directed a Verizon's on their self-help message board. While ragging on a vendor like Verizon has cathartic benefits, it detracts from solutions. One lonely voice in the wilderness suggested the BoxWave "iPod Charger Adapter" as the solutions to overcome the poor engineering that prevents the otherwise wonderful mobile WiFi device, the Verizon MiFi, from charging while in use. Suggestions on the Verizon site included dozens of people who seemed more interested in how clever they were in the fine art of cable-cobbling. Hey, it's simple. Why pay $5 for some dumb cable made in an Asian factory when all you need is duct tape, a flame thrower, a meat clever and half-day rental of a front end loader?

I love this cable. I don't like duct tape. If you have a MiFi, get this cable. it works perfectly. Now I can use my MiFi and charge it, even plug it in or pull out the cable without resetting the device (the original problem).

The adapter works exactly as promised and is very convenient. One thing not completely explained is that when using the adapter syncing with the computer is disabled.

Great device:

PROS:
1. Small. Great for traveling.
2. Works well. Fully charges both my iPhone and iPad in about an hour or two.
3. Works even when used with a "USB 2.0 A-Male to A-Female Extension Cable".

CONS:
1. You cannot sync an iPad or iPhone with iTunes when charging with this device.

I compared this adapter to the "USB Charging/ Charger Adapter for Apple iPAD - Allows you to charge your iPad with any computer or USB hub + Free Stripes Stars Silicone Wristband".

Since I travel alot, I prefer this iPad charging adapter. Unlike the other device, you won't have to worry about losing the cap.

This adapter would get the 5 stars, if you could sync the iPad/iPhone with the adapter.

Yes, it allows me to charge from a standard USB port. Handy. It will not, however, allow synching. This was reported by some purchasers, but not stated in the product description. It is decidedly not handy to remove the adapter and plug the cable back in to a USB port to sync. Mixed bag...

The Pros
Charges my Ipad
Charges my verizon MiFi 4510L via USB without issues

The Cons
Somewhat expensive

The Relevant

Bought this originally because some devices are configured not to be charged off a regular USB adapter. This gets you around that limitation. It works fine on my IPad and MiFi and lets me charge on the go. Would have liked to see a 5-7 range for the price though.

This device appears to work in that it makes the iPad think that it is being charged in full-charge mode. The iPad is NOT being charged in full-charge mode, however. This device simply does not function at all, at least not on the iPad 2. When plugged in, the iPad will show as charging but the device does not provide for or allow any additional power so the iPad just charges in trickle just like it would without this adapter. All that this thing does is change the charging icon on the display. It does nothing else whatsoever. The other reviewers are simply being fooled into thinking that this device is doing something just because it fools an Apple device into thinking that it is connected to a high-power USB port. They also do not know that an Apple device DOES charge with normal USB connections (without this adapter) even though the display shows "Not Charging". Just plug an iPad into a normal USB port and leave it overnight. Does it charge? Of course it does. It just charges in trickle mode and this adapter does NOT CHANGE THAT. All it does is flip a bit to make the iPad think that it is connected to a high-power USB port. It does NOTHING else.

As an added bonus, this adapter will not allow syncing. Know why? Because it is using the data line to give a signal to the "Apple device" line to fool the Apple device into thinking that it is connected to a "high power" USB source. All that is cable does is literally cross-connect one wire. Cables are copper wire, people. They are not "magic".

This thing is useless. For all of those reviewers who think that this thing actually works....I have a bridge in Brooklyn that I can sell you.....

The iPad cannot charge from the standard PC USB outlet or from generic wall and car chargers. BoxWave's adapter allows charging from anything that has a USB connection. I would rate this as my number one iPad accessory. I have had mine for a year and am so satisfied I am buying them as Christmas gifts for my family, friends, and coworkers that have iPads.

This dongle charges an iPad 2 just fine when plugged directly into the USB port on a PC with no extenders or hubs. I didn't try it with a powered hub, so it may work fine with that as well. It took about 50-60 minutes to charge 10%, so slow, but better than nothing. It appears that the iPad has to be OFF to charge, or at least in a passive mode not running any battery gobbling apps. Otherwise, like the knock off iPad chargers, it is not able to keep up. To be fair, I don't think this is the fault of the dongle, but rather the amount of power that a standard USB2 port puts out. The iPad will last longer, though, as battery drain will be greatly reduced. Also, the dongle is very durable, and isn't one of those cheap-o cables with plastic ends that are snapped together with tabs.

The Good:
-Charges iPad2 with any iPad/iPod/iPhone compatible sync cable
-Small enough to travel with without having to have yet another bulky charge brick
-Durable construction

The Bad:
-Doesn't charge when iPad is in use (but does slow battery drain)
-Would take 8-10 hours to fully charge iPad from dead to full
-Doesn't allow syncing when charging

The Bottom Line: It works. If you have to have a faster charger that continues to charge while in use, stick with the Apple ones. Otherwise, for use as an overnight charger, this isn't a bad deal.
