About the Author

Gertrude Chandler Warner was born in 1890 in Putnam, Connecticut, where she taught school and wrote The Boxcar
Children® because she had often imagined how delightful it would be to live in a caboose or freight car. Encouraged by its success, she went on to write eighteen more stories about the Alden children.

More About the Author

Gertrude Chandler Warner was born in Putnam, Connecticut, on April 16, 1890, to Edgar and Jane Warner. Her family included a sister, Frances, and a brother, John. From the age of five, she dreamed of becoming an author. She wrote stories for her Grandfather Carpenter, and each Christmas she gave him one of these stories as a gift. Today, Ms. Warner is best remembered as the author of The Boxcar Children Mysteries.

I'm 68 years old and the Boxcar Children books are the only books I remember reading as a child. I went to private school and our teachers who were Benedictine nuns, introduced us to these books in first grade as we were learning to read. Then later, after we'd learned to read we were allowed to check them out of the school library. I remember these books as being so exciting and adventurous. I'm going to buy a set for my grandchildren.

Our children love this set. It's clean and entertaining. Beats the tv and video games any day. These are timeless stories and they always give an explanation of the mystry causes; eliminating the concern of magic and unnatural factors. Suspenseful stories.

Upon learning that our 10 year old granddaughter was enjoying reading the Boxcare Children books, I found this collection for her for a Christmas present. They were very well received and I believe they will add hours of enjoyment to her reading pleasure. Nicely boxed.

So, I'm ordering books I can't be too surprised that books arrived at my door. The bookcase is cute but not the sturdiest in the world. It's just a box with a boxcar picture on it. The box is not in the shape of a boxcar. Just thought that may help.

Very pleased with this purchase. It arrived in perfect condition and the price was the best I found anywhere. My 6 year old grandson was thrilled and has read four of the twelve books since Christmas. He's quite advanced in his reading level, so these books were ideal.

I purchased the Boxcar Children for my grandchildren. They are 5 and 7 years old. My seven year old granddaughter is a very young second grader and is reading well, but often reluctantly. My five year old grandson is in kindergarten. Both love the books (which were written with a somewhat limited vocabulary but lots of action). After teaching special education for 21 years I have learned that an interesting story will trump reading difficulty nearly every time. An adult should "check in" with the reader fairly often, however, because sometimes a phrase may be a little dated and require some explaining.
