Book Description

September 1, 1990
The Boxer's Workout is a fitness routine for whole body conditioning, aerobic fitness and fun. It presents the non-contact workout program that boxers use to get into shape.

The Boxer's Workout starts with the basics: pre-conditioning, roadwork, when and where to train, diet, & equipment. It contains over 80 photo illustrations on warm-up, movement, shadow boxing, heavy bag, speed bag, punches, circuit, developing your own boxing style and more. It assumes no prior knowledge of boxing. The Boxer's Workout is suitable for men, women, teens and seniors.

Since its publication in 1990, the book has sold over 17,000 copies worldwide. It has grown to become the definitive guidebook for serious boxers and martial artists, and is also recognized in boxing circles as the "bible" of the burgeoning boxing-for-fitness movement. The Boxer's Workout has been excerpted in Men's Health and Men's Fitness magazines, and was featured in Men's Journal magazine and on TV's "Body By jake" fitness show.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Although Joyce Carol Oates's fascination with boxing has given the sport its latest round of literary prominence, the sweet science of pugilism played a minor role in the fitness revolution until its recent discovery by white-collar males seeking a more exciting alternative to running, aerobics, Nautilus and the like. First came articles on exercises using boxing techniques in the men's slick fitness magazines and in such yuppie bibles as Esquire and GQ. Now DePasquale carries that momentum vigorously forward in this stunningly illustrated combination of personal reminiscence and training guide that may do for boxing what Arnold Schwarzenegger's popular bodybuilding manuals did for the pumping iron game. The completeness and style of presentation, however, are vastly superior to the bodybuilding genre of fitness writing. The boxer, claims the 27-year-old New York advertising executive, needs it all: power, speed, endurance, reaction, flexibility, and balance, requirements also for getting ahead in the male-dominated business world. Moreover, he perceives the sport's intense physicality as ideal for releasing aggression and building cardiovascular health. Beginners training at home or in a gym will find this workout's core exercises demanding yet thorough. And its creator's refreshingly sane understanding of self-motivation will keep them hooked as they progress from the medicine ball to roadwork. The total effect is a knockout. --Publisher's Weekly Magazine

About the Author

2.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre at best., December 2, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Boxer's Workout (Paperback)
This book is very disorganized and very dated. The abdomen exercises are particularly old fashioned. The parts that deal with punching and blocking are accurate but not well written or very thorough. To any would be boxer out there I would say go to a gym. This book at best will be only a suplement and not a good one at that.

2.0 out of 5 stars Glamorizes Weekend Warriors in New York City, October 6, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Boxer's Workout (Paperback)
This book is written about a boxer's workout, but it does not go into detail about the workouts and it is not presented by a boxer. It is written by a weekend warrior in New York City who glamorizes the sport for his yuppie buddies and defunct gym owners. While there is a mention of the actual workout, there is insufficient detail about the workout and its many variations. I was very disappointed with it, and I work out in New York City.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, February 3, 2002
This review is from: The Boxer's Workout (Paperback)
This book, although written for adult professsionals, might as well had been written for a juvenielle in that it is so basic and doesn't really offer anything of substance that a one with common sense doesn't know already. This book was a waste of money for me. This book is outdated, and its explanations are simplistic at best. Get "Fighting Fit" or "Championship Steetfighting" if you want something with more meat and less fluff. Seems like this book could have been used in a singles club as the author innundates us with photos of friends who use the boxer's workout.
