4.0 out of 5 stars Good read. Down to the basics.
I've taken up boxing for some time, and decided to do a personal research. For the beginner I recommend this book. Keep in mind beginner that you should still persue a trainer in order to compete safely. And for the experienced boxer I also recommened this book. I found it suprising the little things I have forgotten during training that this book points out. It is a...

2.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre at best.
This book is very disorganized and very dated. The abdomen exercises are particularly old fashioned. The parts that deal with punching and blocking are accurate but not well written or very thorough. To any would be boxer out there I would say go to a gym. This book at best will be only a suplement and not a good one at that.

2.0 out of 5 stars Glamorizes Weekend Warriors in New York City, October 6, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Boxer's Workout (Paperback)
This book is written about a boxer's workout, but it does not go into detail about the workouts and it is not presented by a boxer. It is written by a weekend warrior in New York City who glamorizes the sport for his yuppie buddies and defunct gym owners. While there is a mention of the actual workout, there is insufficient detail about the workout and its many variations. I was very disappointed with it, and I work out in New York City.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, February 3, 2002
This review is from: The Boxer's Workout (Paperback)
This book, although written for adult professsionals, might as well had been written for a juvenielle in that it is so basic and doesn't really offer anything of substance that a one with common sense doesn't know already. This book was a waste of money for me. This book is outdated, and its explanations are simplistic at best. Get "Fighting Fit" or "Championship Steetfighting" if you want something with more meat and less fluff. Seems like this book could have been used in a singles club as the author innundates us with photos of friends who use the boxer's workout.

3.0 out of 5 stars a book for the few, April 20, 2003

This review is from: The Boxer's Workout (Paperback)
As a working class reader (truck driver). I was a bit annoyed that this book focussed on the white collar gentleman at all times and not on just anyone interested in the sport. this can be off putting and annoying. I persevered with the book though and found it to be an enjoyable read and have applied some useful tips and techniques to my own boxing training and sparring. The big dissapointment for me was the diet section (one of the main reasons for me buying the book). I expected a whole chapter with meal planning, weight loss/gain advice and more, but got barely a page.
Overall i think you should get it if you are begining boxing training and wanting to get fit but try to look past the stuff about white collar boxing. the sport is for everyone regardless of class. The author should have written it with everyone in mind.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dont bother with this book., April 25, 2002

This book was a waste of money. I read all the hype in the description and purchased it. Dont make my mistake. The author spends all of his time writing about the old times and showing off his friends, none of whom are or were "real" boxers. Just a bunch of stockbrokers and accountants posing for pictures in classic boxing stances. If you want to learn about boxing and real workouts, then purchase another book (or video). If however, you want a history lesson and see some antiquated pictures, then this is the book for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Basic Boxing Book, October 9, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Boxer's Workout (Paperback)
Re: All the negative comments - Boy, what a bunch of whiners! The author is an amateur white-collar boxer and uses his yuppie buddies in the photos - so what? All I care about is if the techniques are solid, the photos are clear and the writing is coherent (yes to all). Is this book the ultimate boxing reference? No, but it is a very good book for someone just starting out in boxing. I got this book used so I don't feel like I got ripped off.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Boxing, January 11, 2001
This review is from: The Boxer's Workout (Paperback)
Peter DePasquale's "The Boxer's Workout" is a perfect introductory book for those interested in boxing. It covers the basics like necessary equipment, how to wrap your hands, nutrition, workouts and basic technique. The photographs are helpful and most are clear. The book's most unique and best attribute is the workout it describes. This was designed by DePasquale for white collar boxers. The workout is a non-contact boxing workout that can be done at home or in a gym. The workout is good for stand alone fitness or it can be used to prepare for more advanced boxing and sparring. If the reader wishes to take this route the book offers advice on finding a good professional boxing gym. I must agree with the other reviewers that some of the techniques are somewhat dated and that DePasquale sometimes gets overly nostalgic about The Gramercy Boxing gym and the white collar boxing movement. However I forgive DePasquale because the workout is so effective and enjoyable. The book is well written and even an experienced boxer can learn something from it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nothing more than a waste of money, February 7, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Boxer's Workout (Paperback)
They really market this book well in all the ads, they make it sound like this have the works in it as far as training goes for a fighter, conditioning, diet (which has a short paragraph that says eat high carbs nothing more) I read the book in less than 2 hours and basically I figured it was written by a begining part time boxer who wanted to mention the names of all his yuppie white collar friends. I was highly dissapointed

2.0 out of 5 stars Only Peter's friends would enjoy this book, January 17, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Boxer's Workout (Paperback)
this book was written to show off the New York City white collar boxing community. It had an okay section on actual movement, defense, and punches, but seemed to focus on his white collar friends. He even used them as models, and refers to them in text. Overall it wasn't worth reading, and as far as conditioning it doesn't tell you enough specifics. Only to run, and shadowbox, not going to far into what else may be beneficial. Overall I'd say this book isn't worth a damn, and I would rather learn a workout from the likes of a Billy Zabka.
