Great Book!,
By A 10-year old reader (a 4th Grader in Hurst, TX USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Boy in the Alamo (Paperback)
I gave the story 5 stars because what Billy did was brave. Also after all of that trouble Billy did trying to help out in the war. He should get 5 stars, too. The Boy in the Alamo was a great book for all kids and adults in the world. I think everybody should read it. It gives a lot of information on the Alamo and it is kind of like a history book to me. If you like the Alamo, then I think you will like this book a lot! After you read it, you should remember a lot of things from the Alamo. Trust me, if you like the Alamo, you will like The Boy in the Alamo!

My 4th grade son and I loved this book! It's a great read with lots of excitement and emotion. My son read it first and loved it so much I decided I wanted to read it. I had trouble putting it down. It's an absolute must for kids and adults.

A 4th Grader Review,

The reason I put four stars is because it was sad. Whenever I think of the Boy in the Alamo, I think of my grandfather. My grandfather died in World War 1, so I never met him. Boy in the Alamo was good, my favorite part is when Billy said he'd look for Lupe his whole life.

Excellent for the classroom!,

I teach 4th grade here in Texas, the grade level where we focus on Texas history. I've found this book to be priceless within our study of the Texas Revolution. Although not all the facts are accurate (since the book is historical fiction), the story itself draws my students into the events of the Alamo and the Texas Revolution. Our study of this book is one of the highlights of our studies, and the students absolutely love it. We read it every year!

Engaging Children in Texas History,
By Suz (Fort Worth, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Boy in the Alamo (Paperback)
I read this book to my homeschooled 5th, 2nd, and 1st graders. The 5th and 2nd graders loved it, and begged me to read just one more chapter every day. I enjoyed reading it, too--well, except for the parts where I was so choked up I had a hard time getting through it.
This book makes the Texas Revolution come alive for young readers. The events and portrayals of famous characters is historically accurate, with some minor necessary liberties taken for the inclusion of a fictional 12 year old boy. Walter Prescott Webb, a noted historian and professor at UT for many years, was the historical consultant. I gave this book four stars instead of five because, while it was an excellent, engaging way to sneak a Texas history lesson in, it was not as well-written as, say, a Newbery Award book. Recommended for any child with an interest in the West, Texas history, Davy Crockett, or just good adventure stories.

The book was so good that I give it five stars. The book is about what happened at the Alamo through a twelve year old boy's point of view. I'm giving it five stars because it tells how Texas won its independence from Mexico and what the boy felt like at the battle. Another reason why this book deserves five stars is because it tells about Texas history in an exciting way. The last few chapters of this book tell who led Texas to victory at San Jacinto and if the boy, Billy, ever returned home. The last chapter of the book was my favorite. As I read the book it tells how Billy felt when the Mexicans poured over the walls of the Alamo. When reading the book there were some times when Billy was sad. Today there is only the chapel left from the battle, but in the book all of the walls of the Alamo were there. That is why I am giving this book five stars.

I teach fourth grade Texas History, and this is an excellent book to help students understand what it might have been like during this time period in Texas.

Loved it!,

Loved it! It could not get any better!! I liked Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie and Santa Anna! It shows and tells you everything just like the Alamo. Even though it was just told through the mind of a 12 year old boy, it was still the best book. The story really shows what the Alamo was like. It was blazingly awesome with fantasy and real scenes. The pictures were great! I would give this book six stars, if I could. I couldn't resist to say no to this book!

I just finished reading this book to my 6 and 8 year old boys. THEY LOVED IT!! They didn't want me to put it down. I usually read 2 chapters a day to them and they never wanted to be done. That is all the endorsement this book needs!

I don't know how I managed to pick up this book and not realize how terribly sad the battle of the Alamo would be. Somehow I did, and was taken by surprise by the courage of the men who held the fort despite the hopelessness. It's an amazing story, and Margaret Cousins writes the characters with depth, common sense and yet, with that almost supernatural tenacity.
In following the journey of a boy to a man in the face of war, you also get a wonderful, valuable look at the reason "Remember the Alamo!" is still a battle cry today. To "Remember the Alamo!" is to remember the best part of man, that divine part of ourselves that can be inspired to resist, even unto death, for that which is worthy. |
