Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-- Dave Dravecky, the former San Francisco Giant pitcher, discovered he had a cancerous growth on his pitching arm. After a courageous comeback, he finally accepted his retirement from baseball and the eventual amputation of his arm. Unfortunately, this potentially inspiring story is told in an abrupt, bland manner, and baseball scenes are conveyed stiffly in pastel pictures. The lesson is that Dravecky learned to live his life with Jesus Christ as the central figure, but readers are given no insight into the origins of his religious faith and so the message seems superimposed and didactic. It's too bad that the story of this obviously brave person gets such a shallow, uninspired treatment. --Todd Morning, Schaumburg Township Public Library, IL

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational, February 17, 2011
This review is from: A Boy and His Baseball (The Dave Dravecky Story) (Hardcover)
We borrowed this book from our church library and our elementary age kids liked it so much that we bought a copy for home. This is the inspirational story of a baseball pitcher who developed cancer in his arm, made a dramatic comeback and shortly thereafter had to leave professional baseball. The player had to reconcile the loss of his lifelong dream with God's different plan for him. After reading this the first time, my kids and I looked at Dave Dravecky's website and were able to see pictures of him (now without one arm) and read about his ministry. My husband already knew his story so when he got home he told us about his amazing comeback.
