Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-A novel based on the childhood of John Nance Garner IV, who was vice-president under Franklin D. Roosevelt. Garner spent his youth in the 1880s in the northeastern area of Texas called Blossom Prairie. Young readers will enjoy his adventures here, which include a fox hunt, a confrontation with a black bear, and a journey into Indian Territory to get a charm to help him grow. The book is principally concerned with the boy's search for self-confidence and self-esteem. The story shows, too, how families come together during times of grief and adversity. Liles describes the characters well, but does not provide much description of the period. Full-page black-and-white illustrations are scattered throughout. A brief biography of Garner is included, as is a list of "Places in the 1880s." Unfortunately, the author does not indicate which, if any, of the events in the story are true.
