Book Description

April 20, 2008
THE BOY is a collection of stories written by fifth grade students at Ellwood P. Cubberley Elementary School in San Diego, CA. Each child was given the same opening paragraph, and asked to finish the story using his or her own ideas and imagination. Award winning novelist, Jeff Edwards presented the challenge during a writers workshop in the classroom of Mrs. Eliza Till. With the help of Mrs. Till and Mrs. Maria Edwards, President of American Authors Association, the class spent several weeks developing and refining their stories. This book is the result of creativity, personal effort, and teamwork. The fifth graders are pleased to present you with THE BOY. We hope you enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!, May 8, 2008
This review is from: The Boy: A Fifth Grade Anthology (Paperback)
I wonder if Jeff and Maria Edwards had an expected outcome in mind when they embarked on The Boy anthology. No doubt, they expected the stories to be original, imaginative and interesting. They are all that, but many reveal cloaked struggles and hidden fears mined from deep inside the thoughts of the child/authors. But secret fear and human struggle are an integral ingredient in the works of all great writers.
I was surprised and encouraged to see interesting dialogue, correct grammar and varied punctuation entwined in the drama of a good story. Most of the tales in The Boy Anthology are written in less than seven hundred words, yet contain a believable plot, excellent character development, compelling conflict and a credible conclusion.
Thanks to each of you for your good work. It was a pleasure to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Lot of Fun!, May 7, 2008
This review is from: The Boy: A Fifth Grade Anthology (Paperback)
It was an honor and a pleasure to work with the kids at Cubberley Elementary School. I provided the story idea, and the students grabbed it and ran. The resulting stories are an entertaining mixture of creativity and good old fashioned fun. If you happen to be an old codger like me, and you've forgotten what it was like to be a Fifth Grader, let this book be a ticket back to the days of your youth. If the fifth grade is still ahead of you, remember that you can do this too. Pick up your pencil and discover the writer inside of you. Unlock the mystery of 'The Boy.'
