I have a 2 year old son and am hoping to conceive a girl this spring. We didn't practice any gender selection techniques with baby #1 since it didn't matter on the first. We just, shall I say, worked on it nightly. I would love to increase my odds of having a girl this time and am reading everything on the subject I can get my hands on. I was excited about this book at first. She spends a lot of time on the history of pre-selection and telling how all other methods are wrong. But the few chapters that there are on her method are very vague and don't go near into the detail that she went into about the other "wrong" methods. This is the only method I have read that says boy days are 4-6 days before ovulation. I am very skeptical and do not plan to use this method. I would love to hear from anyone who has used any method successfully and those who have not been successful with certain methods.

I was recommended this book by a nurse friend of mine who tried Dr. Shettles method three times without success. Dr. Whelan explains why her method is the one appropriate for couples who are trying to conceive naturally. Methods written about in other books (namely by Dr. Shettles) were created for couples that conceived by artificial methods.

Dr. Whelan goes on to explain that no method is 100% gauranteed, but gives the percentages of your chances to conceive a child of the sex that you desire.

Her method is not difficult to follow, if you are familiar with your body and monthly cycle. I never did buy a fertility thermometer or any other tool.

She also goes into the ethics surrounding this issue, and encourages the reader to consider why it is that they desire a child of one sex over the other.

I highly recommend this book be read by ANYONE considering using ANY METHOD of sex selection, just so that you know both sides of this scientific story. My husband and I followed Dr. Whelan's advice, and I am excited to have conceived a son, and then a daughter which is what we desired to do!

Good Luck, have fun regardless of what method you decide to try, and don't forget what a precious child you will receive at the end of the journey- even if it isn't the sex you were hoping for!

Although out of print, this book's theory really works. After 3 girls and tons of research I found the authors method to be the most logical, and scientifically based. Boy oh Boy! 9 months later our 9 pound boy. I recommended it to a friend who choose Dr. Shetles method instead and got the opposite of what she wanted. She should have listened to Dr. Whelan.

This book describes a sex selection method that is the complete opposite of methods that are proven to work. We used the book "How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby" by Dr Landrum Shettles. We first used it when trying for a boy and we had a son. Then we used it when trying for a girl and, sure enough, we had a daughter. We now have the two children that we always wanted. This would not have happened if we used Dr Whelan's book.

This book did nothing but confuse me. The author spent so much time talking about all the "usless" theories that when she started describing the method she belived to be true, it contradicted everything else I've read and heard and I had no idea whether she was going to disprove her own theory. This book is a waste of time.

Dr. Whelan recommends the opposite course of action (having intercourse before ovulation) for a boy than other experts. Why isn't more research done in this area? How can we tell what the correct theory and practice is to increase the chances of one sex or the other?

This is information is very interesting. I have not tried it yet, but it is worth a try. The book is simple to read and has lots of great information that will (supposedly) help all those that want to increase their chances of having a boy or girl. As for me, I will be trying for a boy.

My first child was a girl and very happy we were, however, I debated about having another child. A couple of years later the thought of having another child amerged so I purchased this book in 1997 with the thought of potentially increasing my chances of having a boy. This book does just that, supports the potential increase in chance of the preferred sex, while being honest at the same time. Our next child happened to be a boy. I can't say definitively it was the author's information or gods will. I'm currently reading it again.
