rawest new band of the year,
By Kellen (Libertyville, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Boy Hits Car (Audio CD)
One of the many great things about Boy Hits Car's new self titled cd is that although it recalls many different bands (that range from Papa Roach to Led Zeppelin to System of a Down to Incubus) it supercedes all of them and comes out with a completely distinct sound all its own. An intense, energetic, positive sound that is unlike any other band out there. This sound, deemed lovecore by the band, is powered by the driving beats laid down by bassist Scott and the lyrics of Cregg. Those lyrics, that immediately catch the listeners attention, shift from soothing melodies to pleading screams flawlessly. Unlike numetal bands, which Boy Hits Car is definitely not, the lyrics, which double easily as poetry, revert back to the days of Morrison. Another major difference between BHC and most numetal bands is that BHC preach love and finding oneself instead of anger and pot smoking. The first single "I'm a cloud" is a great example of the bands music. A bass driven song, helped by a sensitive guitar, it is more powerful than any song papa roach or limp bizkit has ever recorded. To believe its energy, one must hear it...

Boy Hits Car, the rebirth of Rage Against The Machine.,

When I picked up their sampler from a concert for the Deftones and heard it, I was impressed. But when I downloaded a few of the songs on this album, I had to buy the CD. After having done so, I can tell you that I don't regret it. The lead singer (an 12 string acoustic guitarist!) sounds like Serj Tankian (SoaD) and Zack De La Rocha (RaTM) into one human powder keg! The bass is in full form and I am drawn into to the melody they use. Loud as hell and soft as heaven, I am a BIG fan of this band. Get this CD. Trust me.

An excellent CD,
This review is from: Boy Hits Car (Audio CD)
Boy Hits Car has some of the most amazing lyrics and instrumentals. One of the great things about this CD is that every song is excellent not just a few. This is one of those CDs you just stick in and let play, instead of flipping through the songs.

My Animal, Your Animal: Everyone's Animal,

I'm not gonna say there isn't better, but - in all honesty - you'd be hard pressed to find such a thing. In no uncertain terms, this is a modern masterpiece. Such a shame so few will recognise it as such; or even its existence, for that matter. My first encounter with Boy Hits Car was in Glasgow, at a cosy but crowded concert venue. Before that, I'd heard very little of CRegg and his crew. The single, "I'm A Cloud," from Napster, and the odd track played by friends - that was the extent of my BHC knowledge. Alone, that was enough to persuade me to make the trip to the Cathouse and catch the band play. Even through the tinniest pair of speakers, one can't deny the energy so evident in Boy Hits Car. And live... In fact, the very reason I've rated this album - BHC's second effort, following 1998's My Animal - as only a four star-effort is because of just that; because of how leashed, how /contained/, this eponymous release sounds in comparison to the group's live act. That aside, Boy Hits Car is a must-buy. Not just for fans of a certain genre, of a certain band - but for anyone with any sense of taste in music. The album's epic, almost Zepplin-esque feel truly has to be heard to be believed. Try to nutshell this band based on a verse, change your opinion when the bridge kicks in, and finally settle when the chorus hits. Oh, but wait: there's 10 more tracks to listen to, each as varied - and equally as awing - as the last. Boy Hits Car certainly aren't nu-metal. They aren't emo or even grindcore. The single thing that can be said about them is that they're damn good. (I'm not obsessed, I'm /not/.) And their defying categorisation is one reason why BHC won't see the charts anytime soon. Or possibly ever. But buy this album. Buy their belated debut when it sees re-release in the autumn; and see them live. You won't regret it. And no, I don't work for Amazon, either. For all I care, go and buy the album in your local black market - so long as you buy it. Have I said that already? All right, sprung: so maybe I'm just a /little/ obsessed...

gr00vy post-hardcore,

Boy Hits Car came out of nowhere and cracked me over the head with a brick. I'll admit that I first learned of this band when my sister said "Hey, here's a song called 'As I Watch the Sun F*** the Ocean'! Isn't that trippy?" "Haha," I responded, "that's a good title. Let's hear it!" Thus, an obsession was born. Pounding hard rock, acoustic guitar (as an aside, I may not know a damn thing about music, but it sure seems like he knows how to play the 12-string to me), great vocals and the occasional Indian touch blend together to form an eargasmic album.
The opnening cut, "Rebirth," sets the tone of the album. An acoustic guitar kicks in, and Craig gently sings, "Immerse yourself in this moment...think about our rebirth..." A pause. A sharp intake of breath. Suddenly, the gentleness is gone as Craig growls, "LET'S GET CONNECTED!" and the heavy strings kick in. The second, "Lovecore (Welcome to" : Rapid vocals set to a nice bass beat open this track and Craig shows his range during the "Don't you wonder...if I love her?" lines. The third track, the aforementioned "As I Watch the Sun F*** the Ocean," starts off with an acoustic melody, but with the stereotypical metal "break," the guitars kick in and disembowl your aural tubes. The vocals really stick out on this track. Track 6, "Letter From Prison," has somewhat repetetive guitars, but amazing vocals. "Unheard" provides some nice grooves, and "Going to India" has, surprisingly, a nice Indian touch and some female vocals at the end. The closer, "Before We Die," is relatively slow and somber, picking up in a rising sequence in the middle of the song (after a great flute solo), Craig's vocals rise and become more and more shrill until his voice reaches a snarl just for a syllable and everything drops back to the previous, quiet levels. About the only complaints that I have with this album is the fact that the drummer does not stick out much, although that doesn't take away from the overall album. The only track that I'm not particularly fond of is no. 10, "Benkei," which sounds too much like punk and is quite repetetive, although still passably good. I highly recommend this album to practically anyone. But, if you like Toby Keith, stay away. Everyone else, BUY.

Let's see you guys try to play a 12 String Guitar, these guys do in every song. Boy hits car is one of the best bands I've ever heard talent wise, With Guitars that range from Heavy riffs, to 12 string acoustic, and a voice that has some SERIOUS range, I highly recommend this to anyone who wants a different style of music. They are by no means mainstream nor do they sound like anyone else. My personal favorites are Love Core (Welcome to) and Unheard. Keep it up guys you rock, hopefully the record companies will realzie this too soon :) It's a shame you guys arent bigger

If you see this cd on the store shelf, buy it don't think twice about it just by it. A few months ago I purchased this cd and I've listened to it countless times. The lead singer of this band is nothing but pure talent. He can go from the high soothing voice to the hard rock voice and it just sounds awesome. After you listen to a couple of these tracks I promise you that you will be hooked, from "I'm a Cloud" to "Watch the sun ____ the ocean" they are all awesome. So buy this cd wherever you find it.

I first heard "I'm a Cloud" as a suggestion from a friend online and haven't been the same in the last week or so, listening to nothing by Boy Hits Car. It blew me away, never had I heard a NEW(well, to me) band that hit me with both passionate vocals and lyrics and also the powerful backing of the rest of the band. CRegg is AMAZING, he knows how to squeeze my heart or tickle my adrenous gland, screaming if called for or almost whispering the lyrics as a contrast. But don't let me convince you that CRegg is the only reason to buy Boy Hits Car(Although, IMO, he is reason enough), the rest of the band is top notch as well, although significantly different than the others I listen to (Tool, A Perfect Circle, Soundgarden, Metallica, etc.)To me, Boy Hits Car, represents a nice break from the likes of the MTV bands that have already saturated society. Such has this saturation affected me that I am not one easily impressed by the likes of newer bands, but Boy Hits Car has my number.

"Boy Hits Car" Hits a New Sound.,
By
This review is from: Boy Hits Car (Audio CD)
I first head of "Boy Hits Car" on Napster. That in itself is not unusual. What IS unusual is the fact that I THOUGHT I was downloading a "Collective Soul" song from their new album prior to its release. Upon listening to the song I thought, "This is not Collective Soul." The song was "Man Without Skin" and it was unlike anything I'd ever heard in my life. From that point, I was hooked. I had to find out who it was that had written this song. Now whether this was a cunning marketing strategy on the part of Boy Hits Car, or the handiwork of another Internet Idiot, Boy Hits Car now has a fan that they would otherwise not have had. Their debut self-titled album is a testament to the band's originality and energy. Nowehere else will you find the soaring vocals over a POWERFUL electric guitar and (get this) an acoustic twelve string. Lead singer CRegg's vocals are a nonstop barrage of lilting lyrics that rise and fall like waves; sometimes passionate, sometimes heartfelt screaming. It is also refreshing to find a band which finds a philosophy and seeks to uphold it through their music. Boy Hits Car is a terrific band with terrific, refreshing words to say. If you're not frightened by intense guitar music, and you don't shy away for songs that actually mean something, this record will be a blue chip in your collection.
