Boy Meets World joined the ABC network's successful "TGIF" lineup in 1993, and instantly distinguished itself from the dewy-eyed hokum that passes for much family viewing with its relative sophistication, emotional complexity, and smart, stylish dialogue. In a way, Boy Meets World, starring Ben Savage, picked up where ABC's The Wonder Years (1988-1993), featuring older brother Fred Savage, left off. Both shows looked at the world from the point of view of largely unformed and untested boys as they faced dilemmas concerning love, loyalty, and ethics within their families, among friends, and at school. But where The Wonder Years was an arch and poignant series with nostalgic, grown-up appeal--and which had a young hero often at a loss for words--BMW looked more like a broader, conventional sitcom where chatter never ceased. The show was and is more easily taken for granted, but its unusual gracefulness and wit can't be denied after a couple of viewings.

Boy Meets World lasted seven seasons, and one of the real pleasures of following the series is that its story and character changes are largely organic, rather than forced by cast departures or other pressures. Thus the auspicious first meeting of Savage's 11-year-old Cory Matthews and his classmate Topanga (Danielle Fishel) in season 1 leads, quite sweetly and logically, to a deeper relationship in subsequent seasons. Cory's attachment to his formidable yet compassionate 6th-grade teacher, Mr. Feeny (William Daniels in a tailor-made performance), who also happens to be Cory's neighbor, grows and deepens as Feeny eventually becomes the principal at Cory's high school and a mentor beyond. Season 1 also introduces Cory's likeable father (William Russ), a grocery store manager, and mother (Betsy Randle), a homemaker and realtor, as well as appealing siblings Eric (Will Friedle) and Morgan (Lindsay Ridgeway) and best friend Shawn (Rider Strong). A slightly surreal tone (a little similar to Family Ties) keeps the jokes coming, but BMW is at its most touching when Cory's awareness of and empathy for the needs of others expands. --Tom Keogh

5.0 out of 5 stars Boy Meets World Meets DVD! August 18, 2004
Format:DVD
I remember how TV Guide and other critics didn't think the show would last as long as it did, unnecessarily putting Ben Savage and his new show in brother Fred's shadow. But Ben and "Boy Meets World" would have the last laugh, running for seven consistently entertaining seasons while building a HUGE viewer fanbase. This complete first season set is somewhat of a special collector's item for casual and diehard BMW viewers, who not only can revisit the freshman season at their leisure but can also re-examine the individual episodes for continuity issues that would later plague the show. "Boy Meets World" featured a perfect blend of heart and comedy in EVERY single episode for its entire series run, and starting with this Season 1 set, can be owned on DVD!

Features:
Bonus Episode from Season 4: "Hair Today, Goon Tomorrow"
Audio Commentary: "Cory's Alternative Friends" (Disc 1) with Ben Savage, Rider Strong, Will Friedle, Danielle Fishel and creator/executive producer Michael Jacobs.
Audio Commentary: "Class Pre-Union" (Disc 2) with Ben Savage, Rider Strong, Will Friedle, Danielle Fishel and creator/executive producer Michael Jacobs.
Audio Commentary: "Boy Meets Girl" (Disc 3) with Ben Savage, Rider Strong, Will Friedle, Danielle Fishel, creator/executive producer Michael Jacobs and Matthew Lawrence (5th Season's "Jack Hunter").
Audio Commentary: Season 4 Bonus Episode "Hair Today, Goon Tomorrow" (Disc 3) with Ben Savage, Rider Strong, Will Friedle, Danielle Fishel, creator/executive producer Michael Jacobs and Matthew Lawrence (5th Season's "Jack Hunter").

Boy Meets World - Season 2 available November 23rd!

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good! September 18, 2004
By Maria
Format:DVD
I'm quite picky on ratings. I only give things I flat out love five stars. But this is definitely deserving.

Here is a list of all the episodes -- and a short description on them:

Disc One:

Pilot -- Introduces us to the characters. Cory feels neglected when his brother takes his new girlfriend to a baseball game instead of him.

On The Fence -- Cory paints Mr. Feeny's shudders to pay for a water gun. Problems arise.

Father Knows Less -- Alan, Cory's dad doesn't think he spends enough time with Cory so he wakes him up in the middle of the night to watch a no hitter, resulting in Cory failing a test the next day.

Cory's Alternative Friends -- Cory tries to straighten his hair and messes it up completely. This episode introduces Danielle Fishel as Topanga. *Available with Audio Commentary*

Killer Bees -- Cory talks Mr. Feeny into letting him enter a geography tournament when the prize is to b a bat boy at the first game in the World Series.

Boys II Mensa -- Cory memorizes the answers to an I.Q. test and learns the consequences of his actions.

Grandma Was A Rolling Stone -- Cory's grandma comes to visit. Eric has a date with Jessica, Mr. Feeny's niece.

Disc Two:

Teacher's Bet -- Mr. Feeny and Cory make a bet that Cory can teach Social Studies better than Mr. Feeny.

Class Pre-Union -- Cory's class has a pre-union and Cory comes as a baseball player. Guest Jim Abbot. *Available with Audio Commentary*

Santa's Little Helper -- When Cory learns that Shawn's dad lost his job, he tries to give Shawn a present.

The Father/Son Game: Eric and Cory try to get out of a Father/Son game and then feel guilty that their dad threw the game because he knew they didn't want to go.

Once In Love With Amy -- Eric, Cory and Shawn think Mrs. Matthews is having an affair.

She Loves Me, She Loves Me Not -- Topanga develops a crush on Eric.

The B-Team of Life -- Cory only makes the B team in basketball.

Model Family -- Cory, Meenkis, Shawn and Topanga must become a "Model Family".

Disc Three:

Risky Business -- Shawn and Cory take up betting on horse races.

The Fugitive -- Shawn blows up a mailbox and is on the run.

It's A Wonderful Night -- Mr. Feeny fills in as babysitter. Cory and Shawn smuggle an R rated movie into the house.

Kid Gloves -- Cory gets a "Becoming A Man" present from his dad that he can't understand.

The Play's The Thing -- Mr. Feeny's class does their spring play on

"Hamlet", staring Cory.

Boy Meets Girl -- Shawn goes on his first date and Cory hurries to catch up. *Available With Audio Commentary*

I Dream of Feeny -- Cory thinks he made Mr. Feeny sick and can't get him out of his head.

Bonus episode from season 4:

Hair Today, Goon Tomorrow -- Topanga chops off half of her hair to try to prove to Cory that outward appearances don't matter. *Available With Audio Commentary*

All in all, this is a great season of Boy Meets World. And trust me...it only keeps getting better!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Show in a Great DVD Package October 7, 2004
Format:DVD
I collect TV show DVD sets, and I'm very happy to say that this set, containg the first 22 episodes (the whole first season) of Boy Meets World, is no disappointment. The episodes are in great quality, there is a "play all" feature which I find to be very uncommon among DVD sets, and there are many bonus features, like an episode from season 4, audio commentary, and more. I was very impressed with these DVDs and hope future Boy Meets World sets come out just as impressive as this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some material inapprioriate for younger kids.
There is a lot more romance and light talk of sexuality in this show than I remember! Not completely happy with the content but it's a well written, funny show.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sets!
LOVE this series, HATE that I had to order season by season, as opposed to a box set. But all packages arrived quickly and all DVDs play smoothly. Even after (maybe too) much use.

I agree with you. I wish that all seasons were released. This is one of my favorite shows of all time, and I would love to have the opportunity to purchase the complete series. I think that sales would go up if there were copies actually available to buy. If they were advertised and sold in the... Read more
