2.0 out of 5 stars overproduced and overrated
This hit record is as good an example as any of everything that is wrong with contemporary r&b; while there is no question that Monica has singing talent, it's all for naught here. The two big problems here are (1.) the production, which like so much else these days, is over done to the point of being much less appetizing than it might be, and (2.) the songs, which...

5.0 out of 5 stars Top of Her Game!, February 24, 2006
This review is from: Boy Is Mine (Audio CD)
Monica just like Brandy had just one album behind her when she released her second album that feautures the smash hit "The Boy is Mine" and that is also the name of this album. In My oppinion the two albums have more in common then they are diffrent, so obviously I disagree with the editional reviewer that sais that Monica got better songs on her album and that she owned "The Boy is Mine" which I don' think either. Both singers were just kids when they debuted, Monica's "Miss Thang" was released in 1995, she was only 15 at the time!, Brandy's debut came one year prior but she was born in 1979, also 15 at the time. Both debuts were good, but unpolished and lacked top hits, Both second albums were mature and well produced full of memorable hits. Apart from the hit single and duet "The Boy is Mine", both had Diane Warren ballads and Monica even had Dallas Austin and Jermaine Dupri penned songs, while the majority of Brandy's songs were written by the top-writers Daniels/Jenkins/Jerkins, Not bad!. Both albums feautured covers. Brandy had "Everything I Do" and Monica had "Right Here Waiting". Both albums also song well, and apart from their duet hit single, both scored other hits on their own and both reached new heighs with their respective second albums. So, Basically they were quite alike. I think however that Monica's album has got less ballads then Brandy's if we're gonna find some diffrent trend.

"The Boy Is Mine" starts with Dallas Austin's "Street Symphony" which resembles Cat Stevens "Wild World" on the verse In My Oppinion, it's a great midtempo nonetheless. Song 2 the title track, needs no further presentation, it was a smash hit and probably the most memorable song of most singers careers. "Ring Da Bell" is another R&B midtempo, not among the best. "The First Night" was a hit too, a fresh uptempo song with catchy hook. "Misty Blue" is a oldie that she covers perfectly, very plesant. "Angel Of Mine" is Monica's best ballad of the album, it was also a hit and not surprising at all. "Gonna Be Fine" feautures Outkast, it's a midtempo R&B number that adds weight to the album's diversity, actually a better co-laboration then Brandy did with Mase.

"Inside" follows the trend of great ballads, written by Warren this time, although this one feel more of a typical adult contemporary for Anita Baker. "Take Him Back" a semi-ballad that samples Sting's "Shape of My Heart". "Right Here Waiting" a cover of Richard Marx classic ballad, pretty interesting but I prefer the original. "Cross the Room" a R&B song, sound a little dated, like it would have been written in the early 90's. "Keep It To Myself" is another smooth ballad and the closer "For You I Will" the second Warren penned ballad is better, and it was also a hit. Closes the album well.

Overall, Monica just like Brandy had "grown up" on this album and she had got alot of help from great producers/songwriters to fulfill a great album full of memorable hit singles. It's also a great mixure of ballads and R&B songs. To sum it up fast, this is her best album and it's a pleasant surprise. 4'5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb job by Miss Thang!, October 18, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Boy Is Mine (Audio CD)
Once again, Monica (superfluous name Arnold), has released a batch of wonderful songs each worthy of a listen. Dragged down by poor production and promotion, however, this album never reachest its highest potential. Monica is doing her part. Now can we get some fierce production the next time. I think if Monica is to be the next Whitney Houston, they need to promote and produce her as such. On her second venture out, Monica explores more mature topics (if that is even possible for her) such as hustling ("Street Symphony"), two-timing brothas ("The Boy Is Mine"), baby-making drama ("Ring Da Bell"), rushed relations ("The First Night"), that one perfect love who has your head all messed up with one thought of their name ("Misty Blue"), that other perfect love who is just celestial ("Angel of Mine"), breaking up ("Gone Be Fine"), wanting someone but can't have cause they have someone else ("Inside"), second chances ("Take Him Back"), missing someone who is away, but you will wait forever for them ("Right Here Waiting"), the other person at the dance who you are making eye contact with ("Cross the Room"), falling in love with a friend ("I Keep It To Myself"), and the one who you would do anything for ("For You I Will"). Whoa! Monica covers it all with her honey-dipped, gospel-tinged alto voice. With gut and soul, Monica delivers like no other. Bubble gum? I think not. And nor has she ever taken that route. On her debut in 1995, Monica's Miss Thang featured some pretty heavy and risque topics. Always poised and composed, Monica is in a class of her own. Monica takes R&B to a whole new level...noone can touch her. No comparisons can be made between Monica and Brandy or Aaliyah or Maya or anyone. All of these young stars have their own styles and they all deliver well. Monica just has the stronger, better voice. OOps! Was that a comparison? Well, it can be counted as one, but let's count it as fact. The next Whitney? How about let's just make another spot beside Whitney. The two number one divas of all times!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really beautiful songs and voice @}->---, June 4, 2006

This review is from: Boy Is Mine (Audio CD)
I've been a fan of Monica's since the mid 90's when I first heard Don't Take It Personal (Just One Of Dem Days). She has a great voice and even then I knew she'd make it big.
This album is her best I think (her follow up to this flopped) and it has some great songs on here. Apart from the obvious hits (For You I Will, The Boy Is Mine and Angel Of Mine) the other stand out songs are Right Here Waiting (with 112) and The First Night. She has a great voice and sings so well if she has the right material. Her follow up to this let her down, but if she can get great material like what's on this great cd, then she can become a major star again. This is an excellent cd that all R&B fans will love.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strong Sophmore Effort, March 12, 2003
This review is from: Boy Is Mine (Audio CD)
Monica's 2nd album comes just 4 years after her debut album. Armed with the hit single featuring Brandy, the title track The Boy Is Mine, it was the hit of the summer of 1998, and definately helped both ladies out. But once you get past that song, you see there is more to Monica's album. It opens with the irresistible "Street Symphony", which did poorly as a single sadly. It has a nice hip hop/R&B beat with nice vocals from Monica. "Angel Of Mine" is a beautiful ballad Monica shines on, another hit from the album. Ballads are clearly a strong point for Monica, as demonstrated on "Inside", "For You I Will" and the collaboration with 112 on "Right Here Waiting". She manages an excellent cover of "Misty Blue". There's a few tracks I didn't care for, namely "Take Him Back", "Gone Be Fine" and "'Cross The Room", but overall Monica's sophmore effort THE BOY IS MINE is a good album.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Albums Of '98, January 9, 2003
By
This review is from: Boy Is Mine (Audio CD)
Monica hit it on the nail in 1998 with this being her sophomore album. It was a success and went triple platinum like her debut. Still, with it yielding four massive hit singles, I think this album should've been huge. It was the perfect mix of pop and R&B which Monica's sexy, alto vocals carried off great. Of course, you have the title track duet with Brandy. "The Boy Is Mine" was perhaps the biggest single of 1998 hitting #1 and staying there for an incredible 13 weeks. Monica had two other solo #1 hits off this album too. The first one being the awesome R&B jam "The First Night" *which carries a great message* and the ballad "Angel of Mine." "For You I Will" is also generously included. The Diane Warren-written ballad was a big hit from the "Space Jam" soundtrack and is a welcomed inclusion. Also notable is Monica's cover of Richard Marx's "Right Here Waiting." It's hard to top the original, but Monica and 112 pull it off well.

This is an underrated album. Monica is underrated period. She seems to be considered secondary to fellow R&B diva Brandy. Brandy is awesome too, but Monica has the better voice and songs and this album shows it. BUY THIS ALBUM!

4.0 out of 5 stars This angel of mine does it again!, January 8, 2000

"lilman" (Macon, GA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Boy Is Mine (Audio CD)
Of course you know Monica from her songs like the smash hit duet w/ Brandy "The Boy Is Mine" and the smooth ballad "Angel Of Mine", but if you don't have the album, then you don't know what you are missing. Monica has a truly powerful voice and presents it nicely in "Inside", written by the 'ballad queen' Diane Warren. Other good songs are "The First Night" that deals with never giving too much on the first date, "Gone Be Fine", the hip/hop track featuring rap group Outkast, and the remake of "Right Here Waiting" featuring R&B sensation 112. The album also has the hit song from the Space Jam Soundtrack "For You I Will", also written by Diane Warren. The material is much more on the mature side and still isn't too indifferent from her debut. This album is deals with love alot and would be a good choice for anyone who knows about relationships and could relate to this well.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Next Janet Jackson, May 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Boy Is Mine (Audio CD)
This to me is up there with the best albums released of 1998, the only sad thing about monica is that she does not get the same media attention as Brandy. Which i feel is unfair, as monica's vocals are unbelieviable. To the people who have written monica off, saying that the girl can't sing, compared to brandy's airy-breathe singing, Monica is a lot better. I believe that monica's album is better than brandy's due to the fact that it is on a more mature level, And monica is "OLD" for her age and can prove it with her slick grooves such as : The Boy Is Mine, The First Night, Misty Blue, Angel Of Mine, Across The Room, I Keep To Myself and For You I Will. The is seven brillent songs out of 13 slick tracks, your on a winner with this album, if you LOVED " JANET_ JANET JACKSON" and "MY LOVE IS YOUR LOVE_ WHITNEY HOUSTON" this album is for, the same level of funk, soul, dance, r&b and gospel mixed in a tight package, which is your moneys worth. IT IS TIME FOR THE WORLD TO WAKE UP AND RE_DISCOVER THE TALENTS OF MONICA'S BRILLENT FOLLOW_UP TO HER PREVIOUS HIT ALBUM "MISSY THANG" THE BOY IS MINE, Buy it now
