5.0 out of 5 stars Penetrates The Soul, Probably The Best
The Boy Next Door, by R.L.Stine, is a very unique book to the Fear Street series.
It describes Scott, the boy next door, who is a mad killer, and three girls who are madly in love with Scott.
Scott is a truly creepy dude. He is a football star, but hates girls who wear makeup or dress skimply. In his mind, it is his duty to kill all the girls who do these...

Scott is a truly creepy dude. He is a football star, but hates girls who wear makeup or dress skimply. In his mind, it is his duty to kill all the girls who do these rather normal things.
Scott is the whole point of this book, and Stine makes him a truly scary and mad character.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's the very Best book of them all!, April 13, 1998

This review is from: The Boy Next Door (Fear Street, No. 39) (Mass Market Paperback)
When I was younger, I read the Goosebumbs series, and enjoyed them until they got sappy, around #35. I didn't want to read Fear Street right away because I was afraid that it might be the same way. Well, while browsing our local bookstore, I saw "The Boy Next Door" and decided to give it a try. On the first chapter, I was hooked! I recomend this book to anyone and everyone.

This book is brilliant in the sense that it has you completely hooked, and you can read it more than once comfortably, though that applies to many of R.L. Stine's books. From the first chapter you know who the bad guy is, though the insight to his POV is pretty cool. Once you you really get into the story, you don't expect the ending entirely. A nicely written book and all around good read.

This review is from: The Boy Next Door (Fear Street, No. 39) (Mass Market Paperback)
I read other great R.L Stine books but this has to be the ultimate best.

This book is about two girls,Rachel and Lynn, who have a major crush on Scott. He is Athletic, cute and everything else. But he had lost his girl friend at home so he decided he will get a good one who behaves. But even if Rachel and Lynn still think they have the chance of being his girl friend they don't because Scott is fed up with them. So now he wants to teach those unbehaving girls a killer lesson!

I give this book 5 stars for it's so scary and suspenseful that you can't put it down.

I thought the book was pretty cool. It was about when Scott came to Shadyside High and the day he moves in Crystal looks out the window in here bedrooim and sees scott undress he looks over and he shuts his curtains. Crysal and Lauren make a bet to see who could get out with him first. Scott likes GOOD girls thats how his first grilfriend died 'Dana'. So thats a little bit about it im not tellin the rest because you should find out your self.

Books you might like:Bad Dreams, Beach house, The New Years Party, Switched, and Double Date

4.0 out of 5 stars Heather's review, February 9, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Boy Next Door (Fear Street, No. 39) (Mass Market Paperback)
I liked this story, just like all the other R.L.Stine stories. It was scary and mysterious. Also I like how he puts them in odd ways. But I must admit that it wasn't one off the greatest R.L.Stine stories.

This story was about three girl named; Melinda, Crystal, and Lynn. It was also about a guy named Scott. Scott was a new boy that just has moved in next door to Crystal and Melinda. Crystal and her best friend Lynn made a deal to have a contest with Melinda in it too. The contest involved Scott and it was to see which one he would ask out first.
But on the way they run into some tragedy. Lynn dies, Melinda gets disappointed, and she also gets threatened with her sister to die. Also Scott thinks Lynn and Crystal are improper but Melinda is perfect as well as he had some trouble with his old girl friend in the last town he lived in. Would Scot have anything to do with the killing and threatening? What had happened in his old town? Read the book its great.

I think everyone should read this wonderful book. Its not just for boys or girls it could be for anyone. But you either have to like mysteries or scary stories. So I would suggest this book to anyone it was great.

This book is so cool. It has the perfect mix and terror and sexiness. I have been reading Fear Street books since I was a kid. I'm 20 but I don't care, a good book is a good book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nicely written, but not that suspenseful, September 12, 2009
This review is from: The Boy Next Door (Fear Street, No. 39) (Mass Market Paperback)
Synopsis: Crystal Thomas and Lynne Palmer are best friends. They are your average teenagers and like talking about fashion, gossip and prospective boyfriends. Crystal lives in Fear Street and gets a new neighbor. His name is Scott Collins and he seems to have a mysterious past. Crystal and Lynne immediately get a crush on him, and decide to play a game on who can become his new girlfriend. Lynne and Crystal try to get Scott's attention by wearing sexy outfits and inviting themselves over to his place. However, Scott seems more interested in Crystal's sister Melinda, who isn't interested in fashion or boys. Crystal notices Scott's interest in Melinda and tries to help her sister out by giving her a makeover.

What they don't know is that Scott is crazy. He doesn't like girls who are materialistic, wear makeup, short clothes and throw themselves at him. In fact, it is because of the same reason that he killed his last girlfriend and made it look like an accident. Can the three girls realize the truth about Scott before he decides to end their lives?

Review: On the upside, I liked how the story was written. Some parts were written from the point of view of the killer, which I thought was interesting, because it was like looking into his mind. I thought Stine did a good job in making Scott really think like a crazy person.

The downside to this book was the story itself. It was a little slow paced compared to other Fear Street books. For the first fifty pages or so, all we read about is Crystal and Lynne pining over Scott. It was only after a certain character's death in this book that the story really started to pick up. Even though the ending was somewhat predictable, it was still intense to find out what happened.

Also, since we already knew who the killer was in the beginning of the story, there was hardly any suspense in the book. If Stine had written the book in such a way that kept us guessing who the killer was, this would have been a great story to read.

Therefore, even though this wasn't a bad book, because it had some shocking parts to it, it was overall a bit boring and predictable compared to the other Fear Street books.

2.0 out of 5 stars The boy next door, August 1, 2009
This review is from: The Boy Next Door (Fear Street, No. 39) (Mass Market Paperback)
When good-looking Scott moves in next to Crystal, she desperately wants to get his attention. And she gets it.
This one really disappointed me.
It was so obvious what happened (I won't give anything away here, though) all through the book, leaving no surprises at all. Very unlike Stine.
