5.0 out of 5 stars Rivetting, and sensitive performances!
John Travlota gives a rivetting and sensitive performance as Tod Lubitch; a boy forced to live in a plastic insolation chamber due to a deficient, or lack of, immune system. Despite numerous challenges, frustrations and obstacles, Tod Lubitch never gives up and continues to reach for what seems unobtainable, he dazzles would-be taunters with his keen wit and charm,...

3.0 out of 5 stars The Boy In The Plastic Bubble
I remember watching this movie on television when I was a little girl. I cried like a baby, then.

When I watch it now, a tear still comes to my eye because of the "overall" meaning.

Being done in the 1970's, the quality is less than perfect and the sound is distorted. However, since I remember it when I was younger, it holds my interest until the end.

The end? Which I always thought was a disappointment, they never stated what happened to him. It took me several hours of research to find out what happened to the real "Boy In The Plastic Bubble." For those of you who would like to know: His real name was "David Vetter." He died at age 12 from a bone marrow transplant.

I would recommend this movie for persons who remember watching it when they were younger or for people who are interested in SCID. (Severe Combined Immune Deficiency)

3.0 out of 5 stars PRETTY GOOD FOR A TV MOVIE., February 13, 2002
This review is from: The Boy In The Plastic Bubble (DVD)
I actually enjoyed "The Boy In The Plastic Bubble" more than I thought I would. After all, it has been the topic of many jokes over the years. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it had some very nice human elements to it. John Travolta did a pretty good job of playing Tod, a teenager with a severe immune deficiency who is forced to live in an enclosed germ free area in his house. He spent a lot of the film acting rather goofy and socially inept. That made a lot of sense though for someone who had limited contact with the general public.

Tod has spent many years watching the teenage girl next door, Gina (Glynnis O'Connor). He is extremely attracted to her but whether she feels the same way about him is questionable. Eventually, Tod is able to go through a series of steps which allow him more and more freedom. He uses this new found freedom to both try and fit in with the other kids as best he can and also woo Gina. There are some touching moments between the two of them although at times it crosses over into being too cut and dry. I would've liked the filmmakers to have made the situation between them a bit more complex.

Robert Reed and Diana Hyland, who play Tod's parents, are given less screen time than one might think. The real story here is about Tod's dreams of one day being "normal" and falling in love with Gina. His relationship with his parents is very secondary. Oddly, Hyland won an Emmy for her performance even though she didn't get a chance to exhibit any real emotion or acting skill.

"The Boy In The Plastic Bubble" doesn't know if it wants to be more of a romance or a medical drama. It ends up doing both fairly well and is worth the buy at such a low price.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great story, low quality dvd but worth purchasing, November 26, 1998

This review is from: Boy in Plastic Bubble (DVD)
It is great to see this movie again after so many years. The story is still great.

The quality of the DVD is not great but for the low price and a great story it is worth the purchase.

The quality of the picture is very old, poor quality. It looks as if the master copy did not age very well. There is also a bad spot in the software and about 1 minute of the film is scrambled. The DVD package is a simple cardbord box and plastic insert.

A good economic purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rivetting, and sensitive performances!, February 27, 2005
John Travlota gives a rivetting and sensitive performance as Tod Lubitch; a boy forced to live in a plastic insolation chamber due to a deficient, or lack of, immune system. Despite numerous challenges, frustrations and obstacles, Tod Lubitch never gives up and continues to reach for what seems unobtainable, he dazzles would-be taunters with his keen wit and charm, successfully wooes the ever popular girl of his dreams, and helps design a spacesuit to wear that will enable him to leave his "bubble". Without giving too much of the plot away its worth saying that this movie is a collector's item.

I believe that the person who wrote the review on November 23, 2004 misread the review by the person in Atlanta. The person not once states that Tod Lubitch has AIDS or HIV, but expresses concern over how society treats those who are sick; our elderly, young, poor etc. And how health care has quickly become a luxury rather than a privilege. Not one person in our rich Nation should go without adequate medical coverage.

Lastly, much can be learned from this movie by those who are open-minded and receptive to it. One of the most important messages it delivers is that with a little kindness, compassion, and acceptance one can overcome just about anything.

Remember, it much easier to judge and hate than it is to love and accept those who seem different.

4.0 out of 5 stars SCID Is Not the Same Thing as HIV Or Aids!, November 23, 2004
A Kid's Review
The Boy In The Plastic Bubble is a good movie, I saw it on cable and I liked it. Ignore the review from the anonymous review from the person from Atlanta Georgia that is dated April 12, 2004 that staes the boy in this movie was placed in a protective bubble because he had aids and was put in a bubble to keep people safe from him and that is just so WRONG, first off the boy didn't have aids or HIV! He had SCID (Severe Combined Immunodeficency) which caused his immune system to not be able to fight off disease which includes a cold which most people can shake off easily, he was put in a protective bubble to keep him safe from other people and their every day germs which could kill him! SCID only effects the person who has it and is not spreadable! Maybe it's just me but I thought that review was insenstitive to people with SCID and also HIV and Aids and is proof that not only should people think before they speak but in this case they should also think before they type!

2.0 out of 5 stars One Of Travolta's Best Movies., August 11, 2001

I can still remember this movie when it was shown on TV back in 1976. I thought it was a good story. It still is, but I was extremely disappointed in the DVD release of it. It's a really bad transfer & the packaging that it came in is really pitiful. I can't understand why they (Essex Entertainment) would want to cheapen the best format in the world?

There was also a huge error on it as well. On the disc they have: "The Boy In The Bubble".

It's a shame that this great movie had to be wrecked by a very poor DVD release.

This is a good movie. John Travola as usual is suberb! Okay I agree that the anonymous reviewer from Nov 23 2004 was a bit harsh about the anonymous review from April 12 2004 but I also get the impression that that reviewer thought that perhaps the movie was about HIV because that is all they talked about but I don't think the person meant anything bad by it. I would have to that he or she Wasn't trying to offend anyone!

To start things off I will watch it over and over. John Travolta is a wonderful actor and portrayed the story of this boy wonderfully. It is very sad how he had to live so isolated in this plastic housing just so he could survive. It was kinda sad how the girl next door took him for granted but finally came to what I think love him. The only thing I didn't like was the ending. I wish they would have said whatever happened to him, or how he's doing or something. What became of him after he came out of the bubble. I think the ending isn't fair since it left me questioning. But like I said I will watch it over and over. : )

5.0 out of 5 stars The Boy In The Plastic Bubble Is A Good Movie!, October 7, 2005
A Kid's Review
I saw the movie The Boy in the Plastic Bubble and I liked it. This movie I believe originally aired on TV in 1976 and it is very good! John Travolta stars as a teenager named Todd Lubitch who is has to live in a plastic chamber because he has a nonfunctioning immune system and germs are extremely dangerous for him. The movie also stars Robert Reed and Diana Hyland as his parents and Glynnis O'Connor as the teenage girl who lives next door who started off as a mean brat but later befriended him. I highly recommend this movie!

This is a really funny movie. I'd definitly rate it in my favorite 25 of all time. Don't get this movie because of it's plot, though, but it is a really good movie to see if you just want to laugh for 90 minutes.
